What all would you expect if you took your boat to a mechanic for a rebuild?

I was just wondering what the general consensus was on a rebuild if you took it to a mechanic.Should fuel filter ,lines, and injectors or carbs be cleaned?T-stats changed?Lake tested?!!!??? And by all means, doesn't one think it should run better? I'm in the process of a huge mess,no names mentioned ,yet, lol, and was just makig sure i wasn't expecting too much for the money i have spent.Any thoughts? Oh yeah, and what about finding out what caused the original failure so it don't happen again?Wouldn't this be pretty important?

It depends upon what you and he calls a "rebuild"..
If he replaced bearings, rings, or pistons, I would think he'd only install carb kits if they were needed. ( not saying I would do it that way, if I were doing it)
Lake tested ? Yes T stats - yes Fuel lines - no
Now, Donald...please pick John Bolton for your running mate.

General rebuild; Bore all cylinders Replace pistons with correct oversize pistons All new gaskets. Inspect all bearings, crank main bearings rod to crank bearings wrist pin bearings/ replace as necessary Inspect connecting rods/ replace as necessary Replace water pump impeller and housing Replace thermostats Replace water diverter tubes(if applicable) Replace poppet springs and valves Replace spark plugs Change oil in lower unit.
Other things that may arise, is to bead blast water cooling passages, remove water diverter plate and replace grommet, paint block and clean/paint schroud area. Inspect or replace as necessary all electrical items like ign, boxes, stator, coils, triggers, replace bleed hoses, clean bleed hose valves. Charge battery and add additional oil to fuel for break in. And I'm sure there are a few other things to do that I overlooked, but as a general guide, that's about it.

I would want to see their written warranty policy. I would ask for references (customers phone # with same motor rebuild). Ask if they require a deposit. Then I would ask if they supply a written itemized estimate of cost and time to complete, after tear down and inspection. If they do not supply all of the info requested or if they do require a deposit, run away. I would expect a phone call if anything unexpected comes up. Then we are going to the lake to check it out before paying. I know this is extream but I hear too many horror stories from bad experiences on boat repaires.
