wHAT IS A GOOD LAKE to drift fish close to Ft. Worth? I am wanting some size to them, and Joe Pool just does not have it.

Lake Lewisville is a terrific drifting lake. The channel cats will be spawning for the next several weeks which could impact drift fishing results.

Good luck fishing,

Wally

I'm going to have to agree on the drifting Lewisville. We drifted Fri and Saturday night and caught a lot of nice sized 4-6 pound fish, but they don't seem to be really in the deeper water yet. Should have fished the shallow rocks I think. They will be in the deeper water very soon as it stays hot consistantly in the next couple of weeks. Drifted with shad and cut bait.

i have heard of ppl drift fishing, but have wondered how they get their bait down to the bottom and not get it hung up on something. lets say, you start to drift in water that is 25 ft deep. how would yall set up to not get your hook hung up?

Use a Carolina rig with about a 1 ounce egg weight. Lewisville for the most part isn't a very brushy lake compared to places like Ray Roberts. The Old part of the lake has several good places that you can drift for hours without getting hung up.

So is the idea with drift fishing to have the bait remain in contact with the bottom? Or should it be drifted suspended above the bottom?

Keeping the bait in contact with the bottom will draw the most strikes compliments of the abundent channel cat. If you would like to target blue cats you will need a float on the leader to keep the bait off the bottom.

Good luck fishing

What kind of small float do you recommend using to float the leader with? I never have tried this yet, but may see if it improves my fishing next time.

I have tried a styro-foam sphere bobber and didn't like it that much. I prefer the small elongated crappie cork with the plastic stopper. I've only been seriously fishing blue cats for a little more that one year so I'm still trying different methods.

Hope it works for you,

Wally

If you want a quick easy method of suspending your bait while drift fishing, try what the striper fishermen use....Balloon lines.

Measure your line to the depth you want to fish. Then simply blow up a small balloon and pinch it off (don't tie it yet). First make a three or four inch loop in your line at the depth point you want. Now lay this loop under the thumb and finger you are using to hold the balloon pinched off with. Now go ahead and make an overhand knot that will lock the air in the balloon and encompasses this loop at the same time.

Now, when a fish hits your line it will pull the loop out of the overhand knot and release the balloon which will float away and you will have a line ready to fight the fish without bobbers getting in your way.

Balloons are cheap.
