Are there any advantages in having an external GPS or internal GPS? What do you recommend internal or external GPS? I'm looking at a Humminbird 798.

The advantage of the internal is if you mount your unit on the T motor you won't have to fool with mounting the GPS puck as the unit is close enough to the ducer on the t motor head.
I would use external at the console and put the puck on the back corner of the boat for the sake of being more aligned with the structure/cover

Don't know about HB, but on Lowrance HDS units the external antenna locks on quicker and has about half the position error (EPE) that the internal antenna has.

I have a HB798CI SI (internal GPS Antenna) and it locks on quickly (almost instantly) and never looses signal. I'm sure there are excellent reasons for the external antenna, but for me and my purposes, it works fine.

Internal and External on Humminbird are both 50 Channel GPS Receivers and ultra fast position fix when they have clear view of the sky.
I second what TMike said on which to use and where.
Internal for Bow unit and External for Console. Keep the Receiver close to the transducer helps reduce adding any extra offset to the waypoints.

I have an external also, even though my GPS has an internal. It will automatically use the best signal. I need to get a 4000 and sell my 3000.

I have both. Main unit on the console has external and the TM unit is internal.
