I read a tire review on Discount Tire and the author said he ignores the vehicle mfg. plate and runs 60 lbs in his tires. Has anyone heard of this? He claims some pretty high tread life numbers. My experience is that whenever I get a few to many lbs in a tire on a vehicle I will get additional wear in the middle. I think this quy has a screw loose or a bad gauge.

I run all my tires within manufacturers specs.

On trailer tires if is says max 50 psi cold then I run them at 50 no matter if the trailer is empty or loaded, allways run trailer tires at the max.

On my truck it is a little different, they run a max 80 psi cold. I run 80 in the front all the time and they ride and wear good, but in the back the tires will wear in the middle to much so I have to let some out untill I load the truck up then I air them back up.

I disagree with the claims of what you read, but I also know that far more tires fail from beeing underinflated than overinflated.

I should have been clearer. I was referring to vehicle mfg. not tire mfg.. Trailers I always run at the max that is printed on the tires. This guy was saying to ignore the vehicle mfg. specs such as:

Front - 29 psi
Rear - 32 psi

Set them at the manufactures recommend psi, after that adjust them according to ride and wear patterns. What is printed is merely a suggestion. On my powerstroke I run 75psi in the front and 65 in the rear, rides good and wears evenly. Spend a couple weeks trying different psi and watching tread pattern to find what's best for your speciffic setup.

I always run them more than vehicle spec but less than manufacture spec (trailers are run max pressure). My truck says run at 50 and the tire says max 80, so I run 65. At 80psi my truck will bounce your teeth out, it's horrible. I really believe that a quality tire is the difference for long life. As others noted it's the under pressure that will get you.

My F150 Screw would wear tires in the center if I ran even a couple of lbs more than the door tag spec.. After 29k I notice no unusual wear patterns on my Tacoma. Also have and 04 Sporttrac and it good at the door tag specs.. It must be the bigger / heavier diesel trucks that do better with higher pressures.

Tire pressure is a tricky subject. Opinions will vary quite a bit. Using the suggested pressure of the tire mfg. will not work for all applications. The tire mfg. does not know what kind of vehicle their tires will be mounted to. Their suggestion is a max psi for a specific amount of weight placed on each tire. The vehicle mfg. suggestion is probably the best to use because they know the weight of the vehicle. Again this is just their suggestion. The best way to get the proper psi is to use a piece of chalk, yellow is most visible, and run it across the width of the tire across the treads. Move the vehicle far enough to rotate the tires a few times. Look at the chalk mark and determine if you need to add air or let some out. If the center of the chalk mark is gone and the edges remain you need to let some air out. If the edges are gone and the center is still there you need to add air. When it wears off evenly you have found the best tire pressure for your tires.

Same here, 8K lbs. But still fun to drive at 575HP. I run a little less pressure on mine though.

Run nitrogen in your tires! It stays at a constant pressure throughout the seasons and plus it keeps your tires cooler. If you keep a vehicle over 100k, it will pay for a set of tires. I currently have nitrogen in my expedition tires and have over 60k on them and I bet they have 50% treadlife left. just my .02.

nitrogen in your tires will help them run slightly cooler. howere research by honda and toyota mfg. has shown that even though you are running nitrogen in the tires the actual amount of nitrogen physically in the tire is only about 94%. compressed air is 80% nitrogen straight out of a compressor. ive been a tech for 15 years now and i would have to say go with the tire manufacturers specs not vehicle man. specs. if you drive a ten year old vehicle they dont make the tires that originally came on that vehicle anymore anyway. i say always. go by the tire not the vehicle. remember the whole FIRESTONE?FORD epidemic? UNDERINFLATED TIRES AS PER FORDS RECOMMENDATION! NOT TIRE MANUFACTURERS!

Tires usually just specify max inflation. I run max on all of my trailers but guarantee if I run max on my 01 Supercrew 4x4 that the centers will wear long before the sides. I like the yellow chalk idea.

I agree. My Dodge 2500 says 70 psi. My tires would be bald in the center.

I run my truck tires based off the tire not what the truck says. I run a little less in my tires than what the tire max is.
