Hey guys, the names Mark, 16, and would fish every single day if possible We moved to belton a good 5-7months ago and have been having lots of trouble to find a good state park or a creek/river.. Would appreciate it if anyone could give me some pointers ( we tried all around the dam )... What we are looking for is cats, bluegill, bass, and carp. If it's your honey hole and don't want to say anything, I don't blame you... I got a few spots quiet a bit ways out of belton. We need somewhere to fish lake belton, gas money is a big issue at times.

I've been here for a while, hold smart/rude comments to yourself please and thanks.. I've asked once already, I wouldn't spam if I haven't tried everything possible at these spots smirk

Catch and Release fishing is a lot like golf. You don't have to eat the ball to have a good time.

Hopefully Spud chimes in. He has the fish on Belton locked in.

I don't like to sound like a broken record, but Belton is not a great catfishing lake. If you're fishing from the bank, I would try McGregor Park. I believe they close at sunset and reopen the gates in the morning. Cast your poles straight out from the picnic tables. Shad is easy to catch right off the bank here as well, you can get some nice size gizzard shad before it get's to cold.

Give Leona park a try as well, fish on he northside of the bridge and cast straight out. Bait should be easy to catch here also.

Owl Creek park is another place I would try. Walk back where the creek opens up into the lake to the right of the boat ramp.
You'll be fishing in about 3 ft. of water back there. It will get better as the water starts to cool during fall, and the fish move shallower. I wouldn't recomment fishing late at nigt down here by yourself. You can get a rough crowd down there sometimes.

Winkler Park, and Iron Bridge park past 36 Bridge are also places to check out also. This is where the Leon R. dumps into Belton Lake. I've seen pictures of some nice blues and yellows taken from bankfishermen up there.

I have to disagree a little bit about Belton being a bad catfish lake. I have always done well in most parts of the lake. In my opinion it is a lot better in the river vs. the dam side but i have caught a couple nice sized at arrowhead and around TLP. Owl Creek is good but as Jared mentioned, dont go alone...ever...there are always some rougher people that side of town. Also, my boat is at Franks Marina and I have done well right off my boat slip on minnows and hot dogs.
But yea swing by franks after school and drop a line. you will be suprised

Belton can surprise you at times. Alot of open water with little structure in it compared to most but has some good quality fish. The place's that Jared Nic said earlier are definitely place's to hit up. McGregor Park, Leona, White Flint, Winklers will be producing some cats now that the weather has cooled. Being that you are fishing from shore, be sure and and read the shore line. Meaning right now fish are still in that mid depth range on Belton and are moving shallower at night to feed. I would start out fishing steep banks and move over to a flatter shore line after dark. If you fish Mcgregor, don't be afraid to wade out to cast as far as possible right now (giving you a big hint here) to cast to the deeper water. Same would apply to white flint etc... Being that you are only 16 (no offense) I would stay away from owl creek! Not a place for teenagers especially in the evenings. I am a parent of teenagers, trust me on this. Be sure and catch plenty of shad and don't be afraid to change the bait out frequently. Water is in the high 70's and if using smaller baits it will loose its "juice" quicker than this winter with cooler water temps. Use a Santee cooper rig and use heavy weight to get it out there and have some fun. Be sure and post your report on here also.

I do like bank fishing winter blues. I have never fished Belton. Like on my local spot, always fish into the wind. I do better with worms than shad, but thats just me. Give me a shout and I would hit it up with you.

From my experience, it is a tough catfish lake on a relative basis. I catch them at Waco and Cedar creek fishing for crappie with jigs regularly.

With that said, the blue cat population has really taken off. I have generally had my most success in and around Arrowhead park and then the rocky shores on the west side of the lake from the bridge back down the lake a couple of miles.

Fishing from McGregor you got shots at hybrids too with shad.
