Drifted Calaveras early Monday morning and caught 12 using cut tilapia by the cable (to the left-past the bridge). I would start my drift just to the left of the cable so as not to get into the current. Bait is a problem right now.

Hey Jess...Glad to hear that there is still fish to be caught in Calaveras. I haven't been out in several weeks and it was very slow then. Couldn't hardly catch enough bait and thought I was going to have to make do with liver. I'm getting a bad case of "cabin fever" so the next day we have that's within reason, I'm going to out there. Are you catchin anything else besides catfish ?

Roger: Last week I caught my first Red drifting in the same area but he was too small. So the answer to your question is no. At least, up by the cable, you can catch Blues as well as Channels. I hear there are some big Blues in Calaveras.

I fish the power lines alot. I was fishing there last weekend and caught planty of shad and perch by the first boat ramp. caught some nice channels and a 6lb blue. I hear it is good to fish from the bank by the lines. maybe ill try that this weekend. Good luck ya'll.

I know there are some big blues in Calaveras, but my biggest was only 18 lbs. Also have caught several yellows in the 15 lb range. Good to hear you also caught a red, I haven't got into them since last summer. I have been wondering where they disappeared to. The powerline can be a great area, even off the bank. The humps up there can be great during the spring for stripers. Caught 35 one time in the 3 to 4 lb range...turned them all loose. Had a great time though !
Now don't catch em all....

I am planning a drift fishing trip there in the next few weeks. I plan to get shad near the bridge, if possible, but if not, I will find them somewhere.

I might even go to Braunig first and drift that, so I will get shad there. If I find lots of shad, I will bag them and put them on ice.

Roger, I wish you would show me those humps where you catch those stripers some time.

Hey Jess...tried your style by the lines on Sun with live shad but nada.Is there a special way you rig up?The water is in the mid 70s back there and is ideal for catfish.I did try still fishing by the cable with the jugs(discharge)and caught one about 4lbs.

I use a Carolina rig with 1/2 ounce bullet weight, a 22" leader with a small floater about 4 inches before a 3/0 circle hook. I use cut tilapia because shad is too easy to knock off the hook. The water is only about 13' deep up by the cable (past the bridge to the left) so I drift way away from the boat.
I have not had much luck by the power lines, that's why I want Roger to show me those humps.

Hey Jess..That hump that I was telling you about is just before you get to the powerlines on the right side of the lake. Actually it's a long point that extends atlest 200yds out. Each side of the point, the depth is around 15 to 30 ft. April and May seem to be the best months for stripers. Sometimes you catch nothing, but they are there. Reds seem to like it too. I usually check it out each trip, if nothing is bitting, I move on.

Kat-Man-Do,

The shad are still thick at the bridge. Hit the second pole from the right side of the bridge, right up against the concrete. The were stacked pretty good there.

Hey roger-t I am familiar witht he point to which you are refering, but havent had much luck catching any stripers lately. We used to catch them on chicken liver around the dam, does this work or is there a better way?

Chicken liver is still a good hybrid bait out there. I drift it suspended just where the dropoff starts near the crappie wall.

haven't had the chance to do any fishin anywhere in a long time. school has been keeping me pretty busy. i've been wanting to make it out to calaveras and try some drifting for the stripers and the blues, but just haven't found the time yet. are the fish doin pretty good out there? haven't caught any striper out there in a long time, would be good to get into some of them again.

good fishin

Erich
