I was thinking about buying one of these:

to have on board while I am trolling to try and get more life out of my battery. Any thoughts, ideas comments?

It won't do any good for that purpose. It is only good for keeping a fully charged battery charged. Think of a pleasure boater who only uses their boat once or twice a season.

A 12v 55lb trolling motor draws about 50 amps on high and a 24v 74lb draws about 42 amps on high. Figure a percentage of the max draw for about what you would draw on your typical speed. As an add-on to my system I put a dual pro Xtra II. Can't say it did anything since I have never run out of battery. The best thing you should do is to use the biggest pound thrust trolling motor. That way you are normally running at 20-30% of thrust. That will greatly extend your TOW. I run a 74lb on my 17.5 foot boat.

Why not just use two batteries wired parallel. gives you 2X the TOW. Make sure that batts are equal in everyway so one doesn't drain faster than the other. and switch them around every now and then.
