Most domestic light beers in the 4.0-4.2 range. Last I heard, Sam Adams was developing one in the 20% abv range using specialized yeast that could survive in a solution with that much alcohol. Shiner has all of their abv listed on their website. There are various malt liquors that range anywhere from 5-10% abv out there. Mostly hobos drink them out of forty's.
If you're looking for strength, you may as well start drinking distilled spirits.

Samuel Adams had the "strongest" for a while, but no longer. The top five or so strongest beers in the world are now in the 40-55% Range. Google "Sink The Bismarck" for example hehe. Brewdog's 41% IPA. They recently re-took the record with a 55% offering. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/BrewdogHowever, those particular beers are frozen after brewing to isolate the alcohol, and remove the rest, and at that point, they're essentially distilling spirits and not brewing beers. But you're not going to find those around here. Instead you'll find plenty of great, American-brewed "big beers" in the 8-14% range, Imperial Stouts, Barleywines and Double IPAs, plus Belgian Style ales all average about 9-11%, and often come in 23oz bottles. Those are great, and you can find some examples of the styles in most local liquor stores. There are even quite a few beers brewed right here in Texas that reach 8-12%.

If San Antonio is the nearest "big" city too you, then yeah, it would be your best bet. If you can find a Majestic Liquor, or a Spec's Liquor, those would be the places to go. I'm sure San Antonio has plenty of liquor stores. For premium microbrews like that you'll never to find a liquor store, even if they don't have any of the above in your area. ( Looks like there's at least one Spec's in San Antonio according to their website. ) http://www.specsonline.com/ You aren't likely to find any of those types of beers like that at a gas station or grocery store though, it'll have to be a liquor store with a good selection of various beers.

I seen something somewhere but cant remember where but they said dark beer does not pack as much punch as golden beer. but nothing can beat the taste of a ice cold shiner . If your looking for something with a hell of a punch but a pretty bad taste get you a steal reserve211 I think it is a 8. beer.

You cannot sell beer in Texas that is over 5% alcohol by volume. After that, it has to be marketed as some other beverage such as ale or malt liquor. Most name brand beers sold are in the 4-4.5% ABV range.

Next time you are in San Anton there is a Specs out near the forum and a Gabriels liquor warehouse that has a ton of good big beers. Its the WAREHOUSE on 1604 and Blanco. My dad and I just bought 6% ownership in a craft brewery in Denver and we will be looking into bringing those beers here but honestly that is probably a year or more away. And yes. At grocery/convenient stores in Colorado you can only buy 3.2% beer. You gotta go to liquor stores to get the real deal.

Always thought it was strange that people claim they can tell a huge amount of difference between a beer with 3.2% alcohol and a Bud Lite with 4.2% alcohol. It is much more in the mind than anything else.
