hehe. i'm just kidding about cutting the line or running over the jugs. i do have respect for other peoples property and certainly wouldn't do that. i am annoyed by these things, however. i've found way too many jugs washed ashore and too many abandoned and submerged trot lines. both, in my opinion, are litter(my biggest pet peve.) there are many responsible trot line and jug fisherman, but for every one of those, there are just as many irresponsible ones. i want a response here, do you think that when you leave a jug or trot line, that other fisherman can't fish around them when you're not there? not mess with it, just fish around it. i'm not a jug fisherman, what's your opinion on this and what kind of etiquette do you expect from a rod and reel fisherman? please reply

Okay, I know I am new, and this will not go over good. But as a fisher and a skier. I hate those damn things in some lakes.

Take Grapevine for instance. I don't fish there much, due to high boat traffic, but do go there to pleasure boating, ski, tube etc. Take friends out... blah, blah, blah.

There must be hundreds of jugs out there. Feel like I am running a autocross course at times. woot

IMHO

I absolutly love to jug fish for cats on Texoma. Luckily Im on the south end of the lake and there isn't much traffic. My family has a lakehouse there and we spend most weekends enjoying all the different things to do on the lake. I get there Friday set the jugs, run em saturday. After I run em I dont rebait until that evening for Sun morning. So all day Saturday I have a slalom course for my waverunner. I actually have found I can bait em easier on my waverunner.

It comes down to everyone is different, but they all probably learned the "Golden Rule" when they were in kindergarten.

if you dont like the juglines in the lakes maybe you should sell your boat, or sink it then it will give us a crappie hole to fish. the lake is for people that fish and ski. if you hate jugs i hate it when you are fishing and a jet ski comes 20 yards away from you. also if you dont like the jugs go at a time in the year when there is not anyone fishing.

Say you are fishing with a rod and reel and hang up on a trotline. As you are trying to untangle your line, you notice the hooks are rusty and there is a great deal of slime on the line. You check the end of the line and find that it is out of date by several months. Should you remove this line?

Heck yes. I do every time. If a man takes the time to put out a line and then not run it but allow it to foul equipment or kill by foul hook, let him rebuild.
I run lines on Granger,Decker,Travis, cedar creek, richland and stillhouse, but i NEVER leave a line out after the trip is over.Yes, I have heard the old talk that "I will be back tomorrow, next week, next month, and so on. My dad taught me like a lot of old schoolers, run them while you have them, if you ain.t usin them, pull em up and out them out when you have time.Game wardens every years pick up lost and illeagal traps every year, I figure the same rules apply to lines.

Fishing means everything to me, because of this I hope that it will mean everything to my sons or grandkids one day. I am a hard core rod and reel fisherman mainly because trotlines and jugs are too easy to catch fish with and I need to feel the pull. I see WAY TOO many fish taken out of Tawakoni and other lakes on jugs and lines. I know not everyone that fishes with jugs and lines keep every good breeding size fish they catch, but most do. Even if they do release the big ones they usually have a major mouth wound after fighting the line for a time. I have found flatheads on lines in the Trinity River that had so much moss on them that it had to have been there at least a year. I have also seen a flathead on a line in the Trinity with its back out of the water because the water level was dropping rapidly. This was a 40+lb fish. I do not cut lines or take fish off of them. I just don't like them. There are some guys that fish around Windy point park at Tawakoni from Fredericksburg, and they take more fish then you would believe out. They clean fish three times a day so they never have more then their limit at one time, but take more then their limit almost everyday. I have tried to reason with these guys, but they just don't understand.

If you know this for a fact and haven't called the game warden and filled him on on what you know and where/when he can witness the same thing you aren't much better than they are. Call the warden and get it stopped.

Although I do jugline fish, I agree with a lot that Mr. Catfish wrote. Trotlines and juglines do take a massive number of fish from whatever lake they are legally used. However, with the constant restocking of manylakes, it does not seem to damage the number available. A lake that is heavily fished with these items and not restocked on a regular basis can be depleted rapidly. It seems as each year goes by, less money is made available for restocking. I expect if this trend continues, then juglines and trotlines will be outlawed.
One thing that has always concerned me is why commercial fishing is allowed in many lakes. Commercial fishing liscenses are cheap, so the old excuse that they pay for it is wrong. Why should people be allowed to fish these lakes that have been stocked with the public's money and make a profit doing so? Commercial fishermen that I know do not cull large fish; in fact, the larger a catfish is, the better they like it. Is this a problem or is it just a pet peeve of mine?

buncha dadgum cry babies ... somebody always gotta be whinin' bout sumpin ... all you pleasure boaters & strickly rod & reelers, that can't stand set lines, need to dry up yer tears & just mind yer own business ... buncha narcissistic elitists ... get ya a dictionary & look those 2 words up, you'll prolly find yer picture there

and you fellers cryin' about the way other folks harvest fish ... SAME GOES FER YOU ... if you don't like the way some choose to do it, then go off some where & suck yer thumb in private ... it's called SELECTIVE HARVEST ... realize & accept the fact that some folks don't select to harvest fish the way you do ... get over it

"Here's an analogy:

If you see another man's beautiful wife, you don't go and touch her butt, you admire from a distance....the same should go for Jug Lines!"

albertking, first, I don't harvest fish, I fish because I love to fish. Catching fish and eating them is a side benefit to fishing. Harvesting fish is exactly what Mr. Catfish was talking about. Now, I do trotline on occasions and jugline very often. However, I can see the danger of " over-harvesting " using these tools. Gillnets were outlawed for the overharvest of fish. Trotlines and juglines are subject to the same penalty if they overharvest. There is no comparison between catching a fish on rod and reel and a trotline.

Sorry I have gotten so far off topic. Anyone checking another person's juglines without permission is a thief, plain and simple.

I respect trot lines and jug lines and I fish around them and let them lay. I do admit, I have cut a bunch of old ones with rusted off hooks and moss growing on the line. I would never pull fish off of a trot line or just pick it up to look at it.

It's disturbing to read in this post that someone took a gun and shot at another boat or would beat someone up over a trot line. That's crazy. What are yall thinking?
