My buddy and I fished Lft frogs on Fork on Sat evening and Sunday morning. WOW, We probably had a dozen explosions each half day and only hooked a couple each. The cool part was you could see the fish come flyin out of the water to kill the frog. It reminded me of the Killer Whales blowin up on seals. My question is how do you improve your hook up ratio?
I am hooked on fishin the LFT frog even if the fish are'nt.
Thanks for the pointers in advance.

It has been my experience that you have to force yourself to not instinctively set the hook when you see the fish hit it, but rather wait about two seconds then set the hook. Just what works for me though...

Either I've been very lucky or maybe I'm a little "slow" but my hookup ratio on any brand of swimming frog has been very good. I do like the LFT frog the best though as I can run it just a little slower and I think that really helps. I rig mine on a weighted 4/0 Owner beast hook, and throw it on a Dobyns 735 rod with 40 to 65lb braid, depending on the cover. I hold the rod at about the 10:00 position and slightly off to the side and just reel the bait at a steady retrieve. When a fish hits I keep reeling until the line goes tight, then swing.
I really feel like the weighted hook helps keep the bait from being blown out of the fish's mouth when they move all that water / slop to get to the bait. That and the huge gap of the Beast hook really seems to work for me.

I started using the Stanley Double Take hook and my hookup ratio went way up. ALWAYS use braid of at least 40-50# test.
Do NOT set the hook when you see the explosion but count, Thousand One-Thousand Two.... Then set it hard.
If you miss em then they didn't have it in their mouth.

some days, they are not eating the frog- just splashing behind it. i guess they are hitting out of defense? on those days, i switch to a hollow body. other days, they choke the swimming frogs down thier throat when they hit it so violently. it takes awhile to figure out if they want the frog to eat, or if they are just swiping at it without wanting to eat it.

Thanks for the tips. I will go to braid with it. Guess I need to learn to count.

Guess I need to learn to count. It sounds easier than it is, but it's a must. 1 thousand 1 1 thousand 2 1 thousand WHAM!

Thanks for the pointers in advance. I use 50lb- Braid Heavy Action Rod and a 5/0 Wide Gap Plus Owner Hook.
