I was fishing Fork this past weekend and using Danny King punch bait. I have been told that you have to have a treble hook for that stuff, so that's what I use. Anyway, because I was using a treble hook, and because Fork is littered with stumps, I lost more hooks than I'd like to admit.
How do you guys handle treble hooks in the trees?

True, Trebble hooks by the 50 or even more if order from a vendor is the best way to go! I went throguh atleast a third of what I have this weekend myself with snags and complete swallows of the hook. Leaset expensive part of the deal next to weights and slip corks!

Northland Rock Runner Slip Bouncer
Found at the bass pro shop web site under terminal tackle.
I am not sure but it appears they were made to crank the bottom, but I fish cats on the Guadalupe river and the rocks and tree roots stole a few of my set ups. I ordered these to try and found them great. Your bait should float about six inches from the bottom and the current bounces it around a little. The slip bouncer will also help pry your hook up when it does get caught. I have been using this item for two years and I still lose some on the bottom, but for the most part the success it there.

I agree with the many and often approach...
Might also try using a lighter leader to your treble than you have for mainline, e.g. if you have 20 lb. mainline, run 15 lb. leader. That way when you do get hung up and break off, you're more likely to lose just the hook.
No fish is too good for the grease.

This is the reason I buy the cheapest Eagle Claw #6's I can find....I full well expect to break 20 treble hooks on a good night. I generally fish punch bait with Spider Wire braided and a 50# polyester BigCat leader. This way I can simply snap a barb off of one of those small trebles when I get hung, and seldom ever loose a swivel or weight. Don't go fishing in brush if loosing hooks is of a concern. Ray Bob is a very similar to Fork in so far as brush. I admit, when fishing the brush, I do typically fish straight down. I hate doing it, but it doesn't do much good to cast out in heavy brush, you'll never get a hook back. BoneDigger, take that yak you have and rig up punch bait just like you are dabbling for those green lipped sucker mouths, then just work through that brush dabbling for a few seconds under each bush. Bet you will clean house.

Spider Wire braid Original......like MikeC said. Been using it for 10+ years in timber for catfish on spinning reel (doesn't work well on a baitcaster IMO).......no memory, casts light. It's a little pricey, but well worth it in the end. Stren is now making a braid that is real close to the Spider-original.....bit cheaper.

If you aint losing hooks, you aint catching fish in the timber. I lose 20 or more a night counting the snags and swallowed hooks. If you can get shad, put those on a kahle 1-0 and small split shot and pitch that in the timber.
