Grass carp also called white amur. Long bodied with big scales. Used in the pond industry to control certain types of unwanted vegetation. You must have a permit to use them and they must be sterilized (triploid grass carp). Unsterilized they are an invasive species and upset the ecological balance. It's hard to get them to take a bait but they can occasionally be caught and IMHO they are fun to catch. That's not me in the pictures

Eviscerating grass carp and talapia prevents the transport of said fishes to water bodies without existing populations.
Grass Carp are an invasive species of cyprinids often introduced to control aquatic vegitation.

Grass carp are actually white amur, not a carp, I'm told. The requirement to remove intestines is from the Texas Parks and Wildlife Dept. White amur are considered invasive, and must be killed when encountered. There are exceptions: some lakes were issued permits to stock white amur to get rid if hydrilla. Lake Conroe, where I fish is a permit lake. There have been many spirited discussions on grass carp on this forum, and a search should yield more than you really want to know on the subject. Talapia, I do not know about, but they are becoming common in Texas lakes. I have not heard of any must kill requirement.

just make sure the lake you plan to harvest them from doesn't have a grass carp permit. TPWD doesn't take to kindly to people killing off fish that were purposely stocked. But if there is no permit they make mighty fine table fare and should def be taken home and eaten.

I fish with Catfish Charlies Dough Blood Bait for channel cats, and catch a lot of grass carp at Lake Conroe. Of course, I throw them back immediately. However, they have eaten almost all the water plants in the lake, so they may be eating the dough bait as a last resort. If that is the case, they may not bite on dough bait in lakes that still have lots of water plants.
