Yes you can use circle hooks for catching crappie.

I suggest you google your question and you will find numerous articles that you may be interested in.

Yes I have done that a good bit when fishing with minnows, but have not done much in the last 2 years. All I can tell you that will help is don't set the hook(Don't jerk it when bit), just pull back on them and you will get great hook ups.

i always pull the opposite direction of their run. which gets a better hook up, i usually can't find any circle hooks small enough so i use a drop shot hook, works great.

Your welcome. The circle hook will rotate when pulled and that is why they do such a great job or not getting them in the throat and mostly in the top of their mouths. I find it a bit funny that the salt water guys have been using them for a very long time and only the last 10 or so years have they gained in fresh water.

I can remember a long time back we use to go out on a 65' boat off shore and they had a short rigged heave rod type steel thing with a crank on it. They would put like 10 hooks on and drop it down and pull up when bit and by the time they brought it up most of the hooks would be full of snapper.

They will grab a fish lip with just a simple lift of the rod. Sounds like a good thing till you start fishing over brush and it reaches out and gobbles up every twig and branch there is within 6 inches of it. laugh Then you start wondering what in the world you where thinking.

I didn't have that much trouble fishing it around my brush piles and still use them when fishing a jig below a minnow. I will tie on a 1/8 or maybe even a 1/4 oz. jig and tie on a small #2 or #1 Gamakatsu Circle hook about 14"-18" above the jig. I even have some #8 size circle hooks.

My partner in crime and I use circle hooks on two "drop" poles in the back of the boat. We fish in the front and just put a minnow on down about 8-10 foot deep - where cover will allow.

Keep looking forward. That’s why windshields are larger than rear view mirrors.
