Well its nearly time, im about to hit LBL for the first time. I have a few questions regarding the lake thatll help me get prepared.(i know the question's are hard to answer depending on where i fish but it will give me a rough idea before i take my marker float down there)as im in steiner ranch a little north and with three kids ive found it hard to do a little recon.
1, i know its a million dollar question depending on what swim etc, but what sort of depth am i looking at on average?
2, lake bottom, am i looking at silt, gravel or weedy?
3, Is there much of a flow?
4, Do the fish like it pilled in or a little but often.
5, am i looking at fishing in the middle of the lake down the edges etc
5, Do the fish show eg on top or jump alot.
After putting these questions down ive realised it looks like im cheating a little asking these but on such a big water and not knowing anyone to ask and little time to spend exploring i thought id see if anyone could give me a head start.
Thanks
Chris

1, i know its a million dollar question depending on what swim etc, but what sort of depth am i looking at on average? 10-15' at 60yds
2, lake bottom, am i looking at silt, gravel or weedy? It really depends on the swim. Some have a lot more snags than others. Generally it is a fairly hard bottom.
3, Is there much of a flow?when they release water which is usually daily , yes there is a lot of flow. Some days they do it twice. During drought conditions there are little to no flow.
4, Do the fish like it pilled in or a little but often.I don't pile it in much until i either see them rolling in or I start catching.
5, am i looking at fishing in the middle of the lake down the edges etc there are features out there so it does depend on the swim
5, Do the fish show eg on top or jump alot.yes and yes

Thanks Scott thats exactly what i was looking for. Regarding them opening up the damn. I usually fish with 3.5oz no matter where i fish would that be enough or does the flow increase require more? I do mostly air on the cautious side start with a pva bag and see so that suits me. once again thanks Scott

yeah, 3.5 won't hold. 6oz min. But I have caught many fish with my 3 oz rig being pulled by the current. You end up recasting every 10 minutes but the fish are still feeding

I've noticed that the lake has been flowing a fair bit in the evenings since the floods. They're probably trying to clear some debris while it's dark. I know a few fellas here catch well when it's moving though I must admit I've never had much luck with it. Depends where you fish at the time. I've only fished it for the last couple of years so I'm no expert on LBL, but I've yet to see a real pattern (consistently at least) with the amount of bait being thrown in and the results. I've seen loads of fish come out with no baiting up at all (just using regular method mixes), and I've seen other times where you have to pile it in just to get a sniff. LBL can be pretty temperamental. The fellas here like Scott who've fished it for many years would be the ones to set you in the right direction.

Wc like you I am fairly new to LBL. I have only fished it 5 times and blanked 2 of those. I personally have had no issues holding with 3oz. That may have been from little flow. If you fish the upper end it can be bad. I have caught many on just boilies and no method. I did bait up with cube one trip and only got 2 smaller carp off them. Let me know when you go and possibly I could meet you down there.

WC -- nothing much to add really, as my only experience is from fishing the last 3 ATC's, talking in depth to some that have Carp fished it for many years, talking to locals who have fished it all their lives, and my own findings from fishing it a handful of times since moving to Austin.
Plenty more better qualified folks here.
My suggestions are -- take it as a new water, and just learn it as you go -- because every time you think you've even got close to unlocking the puzzle -- it will throw wobblers at you!!
I've had a few nice fish here -- but most of them weren't 'by design' -- more just because they happened to be passing by wink
Local knowledge is definitely invaluable - especially from those that have Carp fished it all their lives. I've not met anyone that 'qualified' yet, but - am still looking wink

To get back on track... Wurzzle, the lake bed is very weedy in places, silty in others. If you want to be certain of what you are fishing on you really have to drag a lead over it. Also, with the floods and the current racing through sometimes, the bottom changes so you can't ever really "map" the place out and then know for sure it'll be the same in 6 months time.

what Scott said and I will add that with winter coming keep in mind that LBL has multiple source's of water flowing in and they are all different temps this should also be a major factor when choosing a swim

Also, mods, I agree with Wurzzle - is there any way to delete the individual offensive posts as opposed to the whole thread? There is often a lot of good info in these threads before they end up getting deleted because of an individual poster.

sorry Gents, will keep remarks to myself, hope you do well at LBL Wurzzle, lots of nice fish to be caught there if you hit the right swim at the right time.
