In three weekends i might be in Gruene at my families land. I have heard about big striper being caught below the Canyon Lake dam. How far is that from Gruene? Is there any park or access road to get me down there without having to walk alot? What kind of lures are good for out there? Will i have to get wet to catch fish? Are the stripers even there?

Thanks in advance

When you leave Gruene take 306 toward Canyon lake. You will go straight passed the light at the intersection of 2673. Continue on 306 through Canyon City and turn left at the blinking light onto the South Access Rd. which is directly below Canyon Dam. When you get close to the gates you'll see a parking lot on the left. There is a stairway that leads down to the area just below the gates.
I had a friend who would use a large redfin painted in a rainbow trout pattern and fished the water coming out of the dam, and caught large stripers there in the past. The trout fishermen may give you strange looks when you start chunking that rainbow trout redfin on heavy tackle though.

Just one more cast!

Several of the fly guys know about the stripers and will cheer you on to remove them because stripers are trout eating machines!!

Several customers have been pitching perch, jumbo minnows, trout colored long "A", and red fins with great success.
