 which paint for boat transom cap

I replaced the '78 ranger transom w/ seacast & fiber glassed the 1 1/2" x 2' transom cap surface.
Any suggestions on how to paint that small thin fiberglassed strip on top. I am painting it black and hope primer and paint from the auto parts will hold up.

West Marine sells small cans of gelcoat. Get the Topside brand.
