On the starboard side of the lower cowling is a rubber grommet. Take the grommet out and behind that is a nut on a shaft. Loosen the nut and push the shaft to the port side of the engine. That will release a pin that is in the shift rod coming from the lower unit. Something like the Johnson/Evinrude style of shift rod/pin. +1 BINGO It has been about 15 years since I did mine!! That is a lot of Jack and coke!

There is no rubber grommet???
Starboard is right, it doesn't matter though, there was no grommet on either side.
Lower cowling is the part that the motor sits on and the top cowling fits to right?
If so, there's no grommet.

There's a grommet that is directly in the middle of the lower cowling going side to side and directly under the carbs about 3 inches back I couldn't get a pic of it. This pic is of the linkage piece that the shifter/remote connects to and it runs to the grommet. One question, it has a small pin running through something and cotter pin holding that pin in place. How do you get to this to take it apart and put it back together?

Needle nose and a lot of luck!!
Check the website that I put a link to above and search. Click on the Back to DT65 under the breakdown!
I believe you need to be on the other side to see it.

I can't find it in this diagram.
If it doesn't go straight to it in the link, it's figure 28 on the left table of contents.
