Been down fishing on the coast --Surf fishing. Catching lots of big Reds but I know I have hooked a shark or two--Hooked up and broke my line quick. Had one Black tip hang around last time I went but was thinking that there might be a better bait then Blue Crab. I want to set up a pole with steel leader and see if I can land a nice one?

Where is a good place to try for bullreds in the surf and how do you rig up for them? Is 61st street area any good right now? What is the best bait?

Fishing down on beach from Port Arthur. The roads closed down if you try to come from Galveston but there are a few spots coming from Sabine that are open. I been fishing with Blue crab and to date have caught 9 Reds so far. Big red so far is 44"--32lbs. Think the one in the pic was about 36" at 25lbs. I have a pic of the big one . I will get it posted on Photo bucket so i can post it here soon.

Thanks for the report! I am going to PINS the end of September with a few friends and I am hoping to get into the reds. Keep us posted on your fishing trips and Good Fishing!

I have recently taken a job less than an hour from High Island and would love information on surf fishing. I went one evening and watched a guy catch a shark. I threw a trout killer on a jig head, but didn't have any luck. Anyone who has knowledge of surf fishing and could tell me what I need as far as equipment, bait (where to get bait), best places to go around Bolivar or Sabine, etc. would be greatly appreciated. Help an old Okie bass fisherman out!! Thanks.

Do as I said--get some smaller blue crab-- get them out in deeper water and sit back and wait for the pole to bend over. This was from last week. I have been doing good. last trip was two fish. 45"--35lbs. 39" --21 lbs

Depends on the weather. If its not real windy I just have a sliding torpedo weight (2oz) above a strong swivel and a three foot leader. Windy --I hang a 4oz flat weight on a two foot line off the swivel and again a three foot leader.

That would be correct. You also need to beef up your line. I have 20lbs test on my reels. I go a little smaller so I can get more line on my spool. You will need to walk out a ways to get bait in deeper water. I set rod holders on the first sand bar so I may have 150 yards of line out by the time I cast and walk back into the rod holder. Next thing is after say two big red fish are caught re-tie you lines and change leader out. A thirty lbs red will stress you line fast. Always better safe then sorry. I have gone to a steel leader last couple trip, Not as many fish but I hope a shark will hit and I will be able to land it! I hope!
