1982 Merc. 115 hp I have taken it to two "mechanics" both have diagnosed different reasons for the problem. Motor will idle but when put in gear to come up on plane the motor bogs and dies. Repairs so far: All 3 carbs have been rebuilt New fuel pump installed New plugs installed Timing has been adjusted so many times I have lost count Pressure on all cylinders is strong Fuel mixture is correct Who in this area is a good Mercury mechanic not someone who wants to talk about the problem but not fix it. Thank you, Ray (Red Cloud)

Has the fuel line/bulb been replaced? If its the grey line the inner linners are bad about comming apart from ethenol and causing a fuel restriction also check the anti siphon valve and the pickup in the tank

Ditto with Matt. You are getting a fuel restriction whenever the engine is doing a high demand. Something is closing up, can be fuel line or primer bulb or anti-siphon valve at the tank (if so equipt) and/or fuel water seperator filter. We ran into the last item this week.... Those would be the most obvious items. The least obvious is that the stator is not switching into the high speed side. That unit uses a split stator. High and low speed. The high speed side kicks in at around 2500 to 3000 rpm. But usually when that happens the motor just baughs and not actually dies. Some of the older Mercs had a single ignition box and the box would actually shut down , but that is not in your case.

If this engine has alot of hours they will develope a idle problem and it is usally worn out labrith seals on the reed blocks what these seals do is seal off crank case pressure between each cylinder if they wear out the crank pressure will drop and not pull enough fuel into the cylinders. There is a little trick to see if this is the case is to double up one the oil and see if it will run better The reed blocks have grooves inside the block and if they become mushroomed it will die when put in gear or bog and die most of the time The only way to fix this problem is to replace the reed blocks and the bolcks are around 300 a pop and there are three blocks and crank has to be removed to replace them....OPTI

THANKS FOR THE ADVICE. I have not replaced the fuel line bulb but will. The tank pick up seems to be working because on very rare occasions I can choke it just before it dies and slowly come up on plane once that happens it runs like I think it should until I back off the gas then it is the same problem again.
I have not had Gun Barrel Marine look at it but have talked to their mech. and if they take it in I am looking at 3 to 4 weeks before they can get to it.
