New to the forum. Looking to get back into fishing. What type of set up do i need for specs/reds/flounder, such as rod/reel combo, line, tackle, etc. Any help would be awesome. Thanks in advance!

The bait slingers will have to add to this, so here's what I use, might work for you, might not.

Jigheads/plastics:
99% are with Oldham's screwlock jig w/gamakatsu hooks. 1/8 oz fits nearly all my fishing.
7 or 7 1/2 H or MH spinning rod w/20 power pro braid, no leader, just tied on.
Norton regular sand eel, pumpkin, baffin magic, tequila
Hogie super minnow red/white, pumpkin, plum/chart.

Topwater/spoons/chatter baits.
6 1/2 or 7' MH casting rod spooled w/15 Ande back country. No leader or other hardware.
Tsunami spook type topwater, 1/4 1/2 oz weedless spoon, 3/8 oz chatter baits.

Rattle traps (winter)
7 1/2' casting rod w/ 12 or 15 ande back country.

That's about it on my boat, if they won't bite that, I haven't found them yet.

In addition to the plastic lures Pat suggested, I am going to say add Bass Assassin's 4"-5" Shad Assassin in Salt&Pepper/Silver Phantom/Chartreuse tail to your arsenal. That color combo works wonders. It's pretty much all I use. I fished that setup on 12 lb Sufix Siege,All-Star spinning rod, with a 1/8 oz. jighead on relatively calm days. With my baitcast setup, I upped the oz.to 1/4 oz.
I've had fair success with the Pearl White and Natural colored 4" Gulp! Shrimp under a popping cork and with a 1/4 oz. jighead but that was only when we were in the zone.
I fish in the Galveston Bay area if it makes any difference.

Thanks for the replies! Trying to get my father-in-law, and brother-in-law back into it as well. I used to wade fish a ton, but they aren't interested in wading. Where are some good spots for pier/shore fishing in galveston or surrounding area?

welcome to the forum..the 61st street pier is about the only pier in galveston surf and its $12 per person, it gets super packed on the weekends.

if you gonna use live bait such as live shrimp or finger mullet. get you a 6'6 med action rod with a baitcasting reel, a lot of people like the shimano curado, i personally use abu garcia 5500 c3 or c4 load it with 12lb test line.

you can either fish free line, under a cork, or carolina style, it just depend on how the fish is feeding.

yes freeline, it means tie the hook directly to the line from the reel, if the water is moving fast you can add a few split shot weight to help out.

carolina style rig is to use egg sinker thru the line from the reel and tied a swivel then tie about a ft of 20 lb leader with the hook of your chose.
