Newman Bottom is on the watershed of Lake Somerville about 70 miles east of Austin. I think that there is a map with directions somewhere on this forum.

Hi hook-line&sinker
I agree with having one more fish less, than the limit on the stringer on the c&r thing.
I have a question(s) on finding yegua creek
mouth entrance from the lake approach.I have gps cordinates that I got from Terraserver website. Is there more than one way to enter
yegua creek. And how shallow does it get on
the approach to the mouth entrance.
I am just trying to get as much info.as
possible as I would like to fish the creek
from the lake side.Thank you for your respone
in advance.I appreciate any recommendations.

Thanks.

It's a wild ride in and out of the Yegua when George is driving the boat. He heads up into shallow water "on plane" in that big bay boat until he gets into the creek channel.. Like I said in an earlier post ya' just about have to know where your going to hit the mouth of the Yegua or the Nails.. and it still is a matter of luck! Most of the area leading into either creek is only about 2 ft deep and both creeks have false entrances. I can't really explain it because the whole area is dotted with marsh reeds and cat tails with several channels that look like the right one only to dead end in shallow water.. now I could get back into the Yegua with my kayak very easy because I could skim right through the flat and not worry about the water depth. The only landmarks left are three or four dead trees out in the lake flat.. the Yegua creek is on the other side of those trees.

elpescador,
I went into Yegua Saturday in my 18' Tracker TV-18, 115 Merc. I too had gps coordinates from maptech. However, they are misleading because the creek actually spreads out into a bunch of march reeds. At first it was very confusing, even with the coordinates. So I idled around until I saw a fairly straight shot in. I took it and was lucky I found it. There are some 2x4 boards sticking out of the water that will somewhat guide you in. I also gps marked the visible entrance on my way out. Those coordinates are: 30' 18.162 and 96' 40.451. That should get you in the mouth, just follow it in and then it curves to the right. It's pretty obvious after that. The water leading into the creek is all about 2 feet deep at normal pool, and right now the lake is at normal pool (238'). Trim your motor up and take it easy.

I am new on this forum and have only been to Newmans once in the past 5 years and was planning on going this coming weekend. I have been reading the posts on here for about 2 weeks now and am really anxious to see how the fish are biting this weekend. I was wondering if anyone was looking for someone to fish with this weekend. If anyone is interested in going this weekend and would like to meet up there then please let me know. I went this past friday and it was really slow. I only caught one fish and I walked about a mile down stream. I am hoping to have better luck this weekend if the rain doesnt mess everything all up.
Hope to hear from yall.

Thanks,

Thank you Hook-line&sinker,Jadntx,
Now I have a better idea of what to expect.
My cordinates were close but like you said,
its misleading when a clear visible mouth
is the exception.
I will try to access the creek from the
lake in the near future, this weekend I am
heading to the Lake houston gathering at
BJ's Marina.
But I'll be ready to do the following weekend. Thanks again for your helpful imput.

Anyone have an opinion on how all this rain is going to effect the fishing on the Yegua? I don't think it can be very good since the creek already had plenty of water in it. It is already hard enough to stay on the bank with it being so slick, not to mention the muddy water. I fished with my brother on Sunday at Irvin bridge and we only caught 7 from 3:00 to 5:30. They were like mentioned above, here and there. Might be awhile before we can get back down there. Glad to see all the posts on this topic. Good luck everyone!

I use to think the weather mattered more but this year has taught me otherwise.. It appears that once the whites are in the creek their going to stay there come he** or high water until the spawn is complete. What happens with high/stained water is it just becomes harder to find and get at the fish. My fishing partner George has summed it up real good.. nothing else matters if you can't find the fish.. so keep moving. When the whites are up in the creek they will eat everything in sight and still be hungry! Whites are very aggressive most of the time but water temperture and daylight does affect their matabolism and spawning activities.. two tips for better winter-early spring fishing.. slow and deep

I will let ya'll know what it looks like after I check it tomorrow morning. My guess is that if it rains all night tonight or all day tomorrow, we will see it out of its banks and Newman Bottom completely flooded. If that happens try Irvin Bridge or farther upstream.

If anyone tries to fish it be extremely careful, Yegua Creek could be deadly if you make a mistake, it gets very swift downstream starting at Newman Bottom.
I wouldn't attempt it at all in a boat for the next few days. The reason that I say this is because of the current. Your boat motor may be powerful enough to get you upstream but the problem comes in when you are trying to go back downstream. The current can (and usually will) affect your ability to steer the boat. A few years a go we had a group of duck hunters find out firsthand. They where trying to get back to the lake and the current was pushing them too hard to navigate the creek, they ended up lodged in a partially down tree crossways of the creek and started to take on water over the side of the boat. They got lucky in that as the boat took on more water the hydraulic pressure of the current increased and pushed them through and under the tree. I talked to them afterward, they were only scratched up and shaken up. The boat was a mess.

Sorry to get on my soapbox about this, but I would rather do that than to help with a rescue or worse, a recovery.

Look for my update tomorrow morning if anyone is interested.

and we're still getting more rain! the lake has jumped a foot since monday and is rising even faster today... its at 239.11 at 10:50 AM Wednesday , but I don't expect it to flood bad.. there is some good news however.. the CORPS will be opening the gate at the dam and running water before too long which should put some fish below the dam... here check the lake levels yourself

I've fished Rebecca the past two Sundays. I am just a little anxious!! Caught a couple straggling whites some crappie and a largemouth. Give it a couple more weeks and they will be in there thick.
