I wouldnt try to walk through the 2nd gut. The first gut can get between 5 to 6 ft. If you try and wade out into the 2nd gut it could be very dangerous. Not worth a fish if you ask me. I also read that its best to fish 2 hours before and after low and high tides. Here are the tide schedules. http://www.saltwatertides.com/dynamic.dir/texassites.html

topwaters and jerk baits in the wade and first gut sunrise and sundown for specs and reds, otherwise tides mean everything my friend. no tidal movement means no good fish, doesnt matter the time of day ..throw shrimp/fishbite combos into the wade/1st/2nd guts for reds,pompano,drum,whiting...if yer lookin for bull reds or sharks i make castable leaders i cast after wading to the 2nd or3rd gut...if you have a kayak use that to deploy large baits..choice baits for bull reds is of course mullet cut or whole and i also do well with whiting heads..if yer lookin for sizeable sharks use large whole butterflied(large heads work great as well) or chunked whiting, pomps, jacks, skipjacks and the best of all stingrays! also dont forget to bring some heavy spoons for spanish macks, jacks, and a possible tarpon look for birds working the surface...tight lines!
