This is probably no big deal but I've seen this often before and it's not a pleasant experience.

I just read an article in a well known, time honored bass fishing publication. Here's what it said :

" With the wind to my back, I could cast 70 yards and get that bait down to 22 feet," he said.

Now just a little farthter down in the article it continues like this :

All of his casts were made with either the natural current or wind in mind. He wanted to make sure the baits were coming with the current or with the wind.

It just sounds contradictory. Maybe not since it also mentions current.

Anybody ever read articles that seem to be on both sides of the fence at times?

The writer said , "with", and should have said against the current and wind. Thats all I know about it. My experence with fishing with the wind I am either going to fast to take advantage of that long cast or I am fishing backwards.

I was on Ray Roberts at daylight this morning. I can tell you all you want to know about a NE / E / N wind. Didn't have much company either.

I can cast a long ways, but I have never cast 210' with a stong wind blowing. How many of you can cast that far??

KVD can... And with a 7' rod, a big bait with low drag, with the wind, I can. Takes a lot of factors though.

8ft bull whip of a crankbait rod, 3/4oz deep diver with a weight transfer system, 10lb line, Revo STX with abec 5 bearings... maybe. I'd have to see them do it on a marked field.

don't know if it's true or what the set up was, but I've heard casts over 100yd have been made with the Shimano reel with the electronic drag control. At some distance what's the difference since unless the fish just hangs itself, you can't feel or set the hook efficiently anyway.

Some conditions will setup with two currents.

Normal current will flow with a river or towards the dam while the wind is blowing over the dam creating an opposite surface current.

Depending on the season and time of year, each current can position baitfish accordingly, even though there is a under current towards the dam, wind could be the decideing factor positioning plankton shallow.

The reason to cast into the wind is allow your bait to be worked into the current. Why? fish position themselves facing into the current to feed.

+1.. If you can minimize the backlashes, it's almost always more productive to throw into the wind when throwing some type of moving bait. thumb

You can minimize back lashes by keeping your cast low and close to the water.
