With a heavy lure and light line , the line gets fatigued . same thing as bending a piece of wire over and over, eventually it fails.
Solutions are as mentioned above. Increase your line # and retie often.

Re-tie, you are having problems with line twist, it is probably breaking at the knot. i believe fastguy is right again. you could also try a small barrel swivel a leader then a snap swivel before your lure. this eliminates line twist for me. also increases lure performance & the amount of time i can use my line w/o problems. do it on almost all my rigs now. the idea came to me after talking to Kerry Dugan of http://www.nefishwilldoguideservice.com/ also if your bell closes while your casting it will usually snap your line no matter how many lbs. your line is. you might want to try some 15-20# braid. spider wire or stealth. also i don't know what you use or how long you've owned it but it might b time for a new reel.

First thing I would is get rid of the Coors light and get some Corona's and lime. The next thing I would do is put a swivel on, that will take care of line twist. Beef up your line a little bit, and if the fish are biting call me........ please.

20lb test and a swivel if your rod guides are in good shape and you won't have any more problems Save the 6lb test for crappie.

I agree with the posters comments that you may have one or more damaged rod guides causing the line to break. You can check the rod guides for rough spots by pulling pantyhose through the guides - if they snag or hang up in the guide, you have found your problem.
PS - use a worn-out set that your wife was gonna toss anyways, not her brand new ones!!

The cotton will snag in a bad guide too and you won't take a chance on ruining a pair of pantyhose that you "thought" were bad. BTW, if you do use panty hose always put them back where you found them. That way if you did put a snag in em she might not know it was you!

If you don't see any 'hairs' or 'curlers' on you line, it probably isn't a cracked insert. 6# test is fine as long as you check that last couple of feet every so often and retie. Also, learn some better knots. The improved clinch is, at its best, still only about a 75% strength knot.
Check out the palomar, fishin' fool, reverse clinch, or double uni knots for near 100% strength. Also, as was said earlier, a swivel a couple of feet up the line and a small snaplink for connecting to the kastmaster (unless it has a split ring) will also help.
