I have only had my 898 a few weeks. This weekend, I want to spend a couple of nights drift fishing.
I typically drift to port side of the boat. Has anyone used their unit while drifting? If it has a narrow beam to the side, then I assume it will not be much use while drifting. If the narrow beam is an issue, I assume that I will need to put another transducer on my trolling motor and point it to the portside.
Do you have any recommendations, tips or advice?

IF your drifting it can still build images and show what's there. I would reduce scroll speed to 1 to help draw better images. Actually I've seen images sitting perfectly still and fish moving thru the sonar and show up great the background is repeating. This was a river fisherman watching fish move up and down the stream and helped him catch more fish.

Doug, Do you ever have personal training classes on Humminbird products? I have just used my new 1197 for the first time last weekend and I found a ditch that I would have never known was there and we caught 22 keepers in one little small spot out of the center of the ditch where the grass started and stopped.
I would love to have someone like you teach me.

Here's a couple images I borrowed from a buddy of mine from Australia that does alot of still fishing with Humminbird Side Imaging (REMEMBER the distances are in Meters not Feet). Check out some of his images: http://www.strikebacktackle.com.au/store/TackleAndBoat.asp?cat=3&DocumentID=90BaraMunda Swimming Thru the SI: Bull Shark Swimming Thru the SI: I love his Stringray Image: Croc Image ... One of the first to ever get a Croc with Sonar he tells me.
