I started looking at redfish line for a new setup and got me wondering, what do the different parts of the taper do to the castability of the line? how will these lines behave differently?

for example, sa's redfish line specs:
Tip Front Taper Belly Rear Taper Running Line Head Length
0.5' 4.0' 21.0' 5.0' 70.0' 30.0'

airflo tropical ridge bonefish/redfish specs:
Tip Front Taper Belly Rear Taper Running Line
0.5' 6' 24' 8' 61.5'

Cortland Precision Tropic Plus Redfish specs:
Tip Front Taper Belly Rear Taper Running Line Grains
1' 3' 18' 6' 62' 210

The redfish lines will cast a bigger bug shorter distance with less advance warning (there he is 10 feet off your rod tip, CAST NOW!) and will hit the water a little harder (redfish don't care too much about this most of the time.)

The bonefish lines will cast a smaller bug longer distance with more warning (there he is, only 70', cast now before the boat spooks him!) and will hit the water much more softly, because the bonefish usually do care, most of the time.

Taper charts can help you window shop but a line on a rod in a fishing condition is the only thing that matters.

If that's the case then just buy the Wulff Bermuda Triangle line cause it has a cool name... and I happen to like the way it casts for me. I have never been able to figure out why they are not more popular than they are.

Have fun with this stuff.
