i took my 6hp out the other day to run it, was running fine, got into some shallow rock and tried to motor thru it. didnt break the prop but motor died and spewed some water/steam out the back. wouldnt restart? i can spin the prop with ease and it feels loose. any suggestions? spun prop? havent taken it off to see inside the prop housing. thanks for any help as i am outboard stupid.
i think its 60's model johnson or erude fisherman model, was blue in color before i painted it.

Depending on what type lower unit you have you could have sheered the sheer pin or spun the prop hub or broke the prop shaft or gears inside the lower unit....As for not starting see if you have sheered the flywheel key...Might get more help from the pro techs if you post engine make and year....Good luck...

Rajin's always right. Perfect boat attitude in the sig pic. I do hope you will take better care of your motor. Real easy to hit stop, tilt the motor, and float free of the rocks. Check out a Solas replacement prop. Steve can get you 1.

The original one is made of brass, suposed to be soft so it will break and not hurt major parts, but hard enough so boat will run without breaking it under normal load. Once i broke one on my 4hp evinrude out on the lake and didnt have a spare, I cut the shank of of a long shank hook and it worked.

Try a diff boat shop

A broke shear pin should not keept the motor from running, you have bigger troubles, and as stated above dont try to run in rocks, they dont give and will win every time.

here is an option that's less filling and tastes great, make a roll pin out of an aluminum can after beer-30, cut a can and roll it up on a hanger wire and cut to fit

I tell my customers to take the piece of shear pin to a welding supply store. Lay it on the counter and ask for a BRASS WELDING rod the same diameter. You can cut the rod with a hacksaw and for about $1.50 get approximately 25 of them. If you order the shear pins, you get 3 and a new cotter pin for $4.00. The brass welding (or also know as BRAZING rods) have just about the correct hardness as the shear pin did. If the props slot, where the pin rides, gets sloppy. The prop will start cutting the pins, one right after another, When this happens, get a drill bit, snap it off in a bench vise to the correct length, and for about $1.50 you get two bits in a package at Lowes, which makes two pins........Ole school rides again.
