Not like it used to be since golden algae hit the lake.

Went out of Cedron Creek today 06/15/06. We were on the water at 6 and the wind was already kicking up. We went to the lee side of the point directly across from the ramp at Cedron Creek to catch bait fish. We did not find any shad and only caught bream. I did haul in a nice 4 or 5 lb LMB in my cast net. I guess she was after the bream same as me. By 9 AM the rollers were breaking in the open water with authority. A small or shallow draft boat could be in peril out in it. I only trolled from the point back to the Katy bridge. We picked up fish on every swing. In all we landed about 15 fish. There was only on leagl white in the mix. The rest were undersized Hybrids and Linesides. I did mark quite a few suspended fish right off the ledges in deep water. If I had more live bait I would have drifted thru them. As it was, I was there to graph the area and see if there were fish holding in obvious or likely places. There were and being it is a 35 minute trip, I will be hitting that area more often. Anyone heading out tomorrow will more than likely have to deal with the same windy conditions. Planning to fish along a south windbreak would be a good plan.

NRGNXS Thanks for the update. I have read a lot of posts regarding Whitney and the fact that it will be many years (if ever) before it is a prime white and striper fishery again. Lately however there have been a few posts regarding sandies on the lake. Think I may head down there next weekend and see!

Ram, I have been on the Brazos fishery all my life excluding my military contribution. Lake Whitney went thru a change in my early teens when they raised the pool level. I have seen the lake turn over, flood, dry up, and it has never failed to respond to the changes and produce. The Algae issue will pass from all I have read about. It has a cycle much the same as any other organism. When in the Military I was stationed up in Seattle. They dealt with Red Tide ( An algae issue) the same as this every so many years. Red tide has health issues as far as consumtion goes where Golden Algae does not. I work in Granbury and fish that lake after work. I am picking up shad and bream for bait in my cast nets. I am also catching fish as I learn the lake. I personaly think Comorants have a greater impact on the lineside fishery. I have observed a flock of these birds stay on a school of spawning shad all morning. There is no telling how many are consumed by this manner. The flocks on Granbury are close to 75 to 100 in numbers. There are several flocks of these birds. They roost primarily on Squaw Creek Res. I see them flying to and from roost as I drive up Hwy 144. I would like to know if there is any research going on concerning this. I have heard alot of opinions on it, just never read any "Scientific" or "Proven" data. I just found this site a few weeks back looking on information on how to "Effectively" throw a cast net. Since then it has become required daily reading. I will keep posting on the Brazos fishery and any other bodies of water I fish.
