What they didn't tell you is that you will want at least two of EVERYTHING...maybe a half dozen of some things ( Like bobbins ) and soon you will understand the obsession. Great to relieve stress and when you can't fish you can at least be preparing for the next time out by tying jigs. I will probably never buy another store bought jig. No reason to, but what I have found is that getting in the jig swaps and looking at others work on forums like this one will help you to be better at it. Haven't been tying long but sure enjoy the whole experience. ( meeting new folks, creating something different, learning from others, catching fish on my jigs and sharing what i have learned and made with others that are interested) You won't regret this hobby. It's very rewarding!!!! +1

Yep! It's fun and rewarding to catch Crappie on your own jigs. But, like others have said, you will not save money on jigs by tying your own. It's an addiction just like buying tackle is an addiction for most of us.
Plenty of videos available on YouTube. We need to have another tie-in, that is fun to watch each other tie jigs.
I did not see Grandpa Bob's Custom Jigs mentioned yet. I get most of my jig heads from him. Supplies I get mostly from Grandpa Bob and Crazy Angler.

jig tying is like everything else in fishing, price wise: you can spend a lot or a little. I've got about $150 tied up in jig tying and have several hundred jigs out of that. I have about 5-7 colors of hackle, chenille, and powder paint. That's all I use and you can make probably 40 different combinations with that. Don't brake the bank getting started. In the long run if you use some restraint, you can make high quality jigs a heck of a lot cheaper than you can buy them. Quality jigs go for $1+ each. I've got around 300 jigs I've made (of course the last 100 or so are best, due to the learning curve), and have nowhere near $1 a piece in them and they last as long as anything I've use (slab daddy's, slab me silly's included).

I don't live for the thump, but I sure do like it.

Yeppers, it don't cost much to get started.....but......it costs a lot to keep it rolling! Once you start it is hard to stop. You get better at tying and then get a new ideer. Then more stuff....then another ideer....more stuff!!!!!!!!!!!! It be addicting; but, is fun and rewarding. Specially when folks start askin, jus whut did you catch that slab on! One of these you say whilst proudly showing them your hand tied creation. where did ya git em? And the story goes on...........MORE STUFF!!

Then before you know it you are cruising the isles of the craft store looking for things you could use to tie with.

A good day fishing is not losing a jig, a bad day fishing is not losing a minnow!
