While at idle speed, tach will jump up to 5m / 6m rpm and then back down again. Does anybody know what may be causing this? Thank you in advance for any replies.

Sounds like the motor has a miss! Is this on a boat or truck and what motor? Give me more info!

This past winter I had a tach quit working . It was voltage regulator going out. Maybe a mechanic will chime in. Best of luck.

Had the same issue with my tach a few years ago. Mine started doing what you describe. Once the RPMs came up, it seemed to act normal. After a few trips, it was doing the "bounce" at idle and was more and more off (high) at higher RPMs. I cleaned the posts and moved the switch back and forth, but that did not help. Finally took it to my mechanic to check it out. Turned out the tach went bad.

Hey Mowerman, being he posted this in the BOATS & EQUIPMENT General Equipment Discussion it's a real good chance its a tach on a boat motor.
