Thinkin bout hittin calaveras this weekend, plan to try downrigging. Anyone been successful trolling there and what speeds have been productive? I think when I was going in early season we were trolling too fast...

Thanks

i have been having excellent luck lately. Trolling at 4-5 mph. The reds have been moving around alot lately. Don't stay in one spot too long if your not graphing or catching. Good Luck.

2-3MPH is a good starting point............. Redfish have tails so just got to find the fish. Redfish are almost always on the move and eating.

Calaveras is a very cloudy lake. A silver or gold spoon seems to work the best. If you find em on humps or on ledges you need to almost put the spoon on their nose. Seems I had the best luck bouncing em off the bottom. If the fish are extended and scattered you stand a good chance in getting em also. Look for the slicks. (I picked up a lot of this by fishing with the great Billy Robinson who had passed away over a year ago. He by far was the best down rigger guide I have ever known. Good luck on your trip.

The wife and I went out yesterday to Calaveras. I have never as long as I can remember seen the water as CLEAR as it was yesterday. I clipped a Chrome Rat-L-Trap on the downrigger clip and could clearly see it 7 feet down in the main lake. Could even see the suncken 55 gallon drum next to the boat ramp!!! Dead Shad all over the lake. Water temp was 105 down towards the powerlines. Conditions were miserable but needed to run some fuel through the boat. Boated 9 Reds and the wife hooked 1 GAR!!!! About 5' Long, while downrigging. Dadblasted thing ruined my Rat-L-Trap bang bang She got him about 12' from the boat and he spit the hook. Biggest Red was 27". Was a ton of little Reds boiling the water back in the shallows though.
