When largemouth bass are smashing shad on the lake that it makes it look like the water is boiling, what can be thrown to catch the bigger ones sitting underneath them? I can see them on my lowrance screen, and thought of throwing a carolina rig, but they were smashing the topwater, the only thing is they were 1-3 pound bass.

I usually drop a big lipless crank- like a redeye shad 3/4 oz- and count it down until it is below the school then retrieve it to look injured. reel it a little then flutter is back. the big ones latch onto this!

I have never seen big large mouth school like that. Ussually sandbass or hybrids/Stripers Niether have I, at first I thought they were white bass, untill I started catching them, the local lake has really been good about this here lately. It's been a sight to see to believe, of course lots of dinkers, but out of every 5, I caught 2 that were 1-3 pounds.

I have witnessed this all summer as well on a local lake.
Weightless flukes/senkos on Flouro works good for me.

weighted flukes (white/pearl), let it sink and they usually hit it on the way down, or keep it on top and let the fish chase it

I was on Fork last week and we found schooling bass and I was throwing a "scrounger" with a bass magic swim bait and caught a few from 1 to 4 pounds. When they tore my swim bait off I picked up my fat free shad and busted a 6.84

Schoolies are a blast sometimes(rarely) you can hit a school and all of them are 5 to 6 pounders

carolina rig is a good bait to throw at a school, especially in less than 10 feet of water.
I like throwing a big swimbait in the school. That's worked for me on Bastrop when the schoolies are 1-2 lbs and the fish I got on the swimbait will be 3+...
really though, if I'm throwing into schooling fish (I don't really care what they are) I'm having fun...

If I see a school I always go fish it. The one thing I learned black bass will school up with whites. flukes, rattletrap, swimbait. Most of the time the bigger bass are the deeper bass in a school.

On powerplant lakes like Fayette the schooling can be incredible -- and not just little schoolies.
If you want to try deeper, I find heavier swim jigs in a shad pattern or big spinner baits work well. Throw them on the outside and let them drop to the depth you want and bring it back slowly through the school.
