I am trying to learn to use this rig. I have fished it wery little. What size jig should I be using . I have caught two fish use a 1/8oz head in 12-16 ft. Both fish were caught while the bait sat on the the bottom with the only movement coming from me holding the spinning rod in one hand and 1) putting in my anchor light 2) messing with the t-motor with my other hand. So that shows me the shaking action. I have not got a bite by hopping it back to the boat. Also I have a hard time maintaining contact with the lure. My set-up is a 6' Med spinning rod with 10lb floro and 1/8oz head in 10-25ft. Am I on the right track?

You do not want to maintain contact. Just feel for the fish before you hop it. You got the right setup going on. I have done really well on the quarter oz. stand up shakey head with the torando and rattle snakes.

I would up the weight. If you cannot feel contact you are not going to catch fish. May as well go to a 1/4 swim bait.

i use as light of a weight as possible, and adjust to the conditions. most important thing is maintaining bottom contact while not using an over powering weighted head. IMO

I would throw 8lb fluorocarbon line on your spinning rod. Use a 1/8 oz head when fishing in 5-15ft deep, and a 1/4 oz head in 15-30 foot. A Zoom finesse worm or Hags F-4 are both great baits to throw on a small shaky head.

As others have said, throw the lightest shakey head you can get a way with and still feel the bottom. Combine this with 6 or 8 lbs flurocarbon. Make sure that drag is set just right.
I rarely hop the bait as others have described. Instead, I would describe it as dragging the bait on the bottom with a little shake of the rod rip when it snags on rocks, etc. Many of the bites are going to come when you feel some interesting structure on the bottom. At times, big fish will hit it on the fall. That's when it can be the most fun.
