I heard if you had home made trailer tags on your trailer and it looked to be manufactured by a company they would take your trailer ! They say your suppose to register it as an unregistered trailer ! If it has a serial number then you have to go through the same process as getting a title on a boat with no title ! Find the origional owner blah blah blah !

Get a grinder and take the serial numbers off. I have no problem with needing a title but they need to make a grandfather clause or something. So many boats/motors/trailers were sold in past decades and years without proper titles and such that they will never be legaly usable again if you follow the rules to a T. I have two motors and a jon boat that dont have titles, can never sell them or use them, and there is no way I think i would be able to track the previouse owner down.

I don't think it's the title part they are interested in ! I think they are trying to keep tabs on who owned it last ! It just has to be registered not as a home made trailer ! I think they just want registration to fransfer with the trailer to each new owner !

DO NOT DO THAT. Tampering with Identification Numbers is an offense in and of itself and will land your behind in the klink post haste.

This is nothing new. And it's not just DPS doing it. It's all law enforcement and has been occurring for some time. If your boat trailer, utility trailer, semi-trailer, belly dump...blah blah blah trailer is shop made, and came with a VIN stamped on the frame (and most have hidden VIN somewhere in addition to the one on the tongue) then it needs to be properly registered.

Trailers are easily stolen and re-sold. The seller gives some song and dance about the title being lost and buyer buys it anyway because it's too good a deal to pass up. That is until a LEO runs the plate and can plainly see that the trailer is not homemade but obviously shop made. He looks a little further, finds the VIN ground off and repainted. Looks a little more and finds the hidden VIN. Runs it and it shows to be stolen. Even if the hidden VIN isn't located a little acid on the ground off VIN will reveal it's true identity.

Now then...Houston, we have a problem. What are you going to tell the nice police man when asks why you are in possession of a stolen trailer and the VIN has been ground off and painted over? "Honestly sir. It wasn't me".

This has been stated here time and again. Don't buy a trailer, boat, motor, rv, car, truck...whatever, unless it has a clear title.

My department has an entire unit dedicated to the recovery of stolen vehicles, trailers, boats, motors and implements. Our yard is full of them all the time. Some folks go to jail. Others just lose the item that they paid a lot of money for. Most of the stolen items are returned to their rightful owners or insurance companies that paid claims. Either way, you will be out a few hundred or a few thousand dollars. Ain't worth it.
