Went out to Yegua on CR124 came out with a big gooseegg. Water was flowing pretty good, and muddy as well. Taking my son tommorow, hopefully the creek will be down. Anybody got any tips. Hoping to run into a few whites for my son.

yaicu2,

i was up @ NB/Yegua about 2 weeks ago & did alright. the whites are there, but not very far up the creek. i didn't catch any until i'd worked my way a good 1 to 1 1/4 miles from the parking lot toward the lake... well past the area where all the brush clears out & it turns to just woods with leaves on the ground. I found my best fish came when i cast across the creek, retrieved s-l-o-o-o-w-w-l-l-l-y to about the middle, then let the jig drop for 2-3 seconds before retrieving the rest of the way.

if you're taking your son & going early, be careful... dependig on how old he is. i've run across wild hogs in the early am a couple of times now & have seen plenty of rooted up areas...

If you look back on this post, you will find some information about Nails Creek. That is the second most popular from what I understand. There are several creeks near that area, but I am really not familiar. I know that HookLine&Sinker fishes several of the feeder creeks, maybe he can provide more info.

don't bother with the Yegua it's too high and muddy and the gate is closed at NB with reports that the water was up to the parking lot just a couple of days ago. Try Nails or Cedar creek or Birch park this weekend and wait another week before trying the Yegua.. for you guys in the Austin ,Roundrock area.. the San Gabriel to the north and Reimers (Perdanales) to the south should be heating up and it is so much closer to you! You just gotta love those hill country creeks and rivers!

Where is Cedar creek? Was talking to this guy out at Yegua this morning who said his brother had 5 already by 8 a.m. which is better than my goose egg. Went looking for it out by Nails Creek State Park, but didn't find it. Let me know.

Me and my dad went out to nails today, got out there about 9:00. Went to the WMA on 1697 and walked out there to the creek but had nothing. Then decided to go out to the creek on CR125 and tried out there for 3 hours= NOTHING!! i saw one guy just as we left come out of the upstream side of the bridge and had an awesome stringer of fish. Only saw one guy on our side come out with 2 small ones. Oh Well! have to try NB in a few weekends.

Made another trip to Somerville on Saturday with good results.. I was the only one up in the creek in a boat (kayak in my case) today. I had the whole place to myself except for three bank fisherman who stayed only for a short time. I talked to the bank fisherman who had walked in by private access and they had done OK. I think they said they had caught seven big whites and maybe a crappie or two but they were fishing for whites.

I probably could have loaded the boat and never left the first deep hole I fished. I was catching a crappie about every 5 minutes or so using jigs and a roadrunner dropped straight down in about 10 feet of water (could not have done this very easily from the bank). No real monster crappie today just the average fish with a few small ones but they were really in there and thick. I'm not real good at crappie fishing and I got the itch to move further up the creek and started fishing for whites, same jigs just different technique. It is and was tougher to catch the whites with the water being muddy and about two feet higher then last Saturday but I managed to catch seven or eight and the last fish was the first fish this year on the fly rod and was one of the larger fish caught all day.

does anyone else rig up like this?

flavorized jigs

first on the fly

my escape pod..

HL&S-

Can you give me more details on where this was? I have been wanting to take my kayak over to the Sommerville area for a while, but I don't know where to put in to find the whites. Also, with newman's being flooded, why isn't this creek also flooded? Any info would be helpful.

It's a short small creek on the north side accessed from Birch park by boat only . I suspect that in dry years it isn't very fish-able because the first mile from the lake is too shallow. In this creek like many others the lake backs up into this area so the creek is only as flooded or high as is the lake proper. The creek was at least a foot higher then last Saturday and for the most part the current direction depends on whether the lake is rising or falling. Most of the creeks on Somerville are like this creek, only the Yegua has the sustained volume of water and current and is the primary source of water for the lake. Whitebass need moving water to spawn successfully and that means the Yegua most of the time. It is only during wet years that there is enough flowing water in these smaller creeks to bring the fish up into them to spawn. I've been looking at some satellite images and topo maps and three creeks on the south side look very interesting. Jerdelle, Burns and Cedar all look to be about the same size as Nails creek and should hold enough water to bring in the fish. Burns creek has topped my list for the next expedition. I'll bet those fish haven't seen much of anything in years... but they will soon!

yes but there is only one day (Thursday) that doesn't have a chance of rain for the next week or so frown But that only deters the fisherman not the fish smile
