I have a 2001 Mercury Villager (Minivan). I went to get a tuneup and was told I have a #5 cylinder misfire. My van has about 136000 miles on it. How much should this repair cost? It idles really bad at stop signs and red lights. It seems to halt a little when I am accelerating and now there is a strong smell of gas fumes when I park in my garage. The check engine light sometimes flashes a few times when I am driving, otherwise it is mostly on. Thanks in advance for your input.

Look at the #5 Injector and check for fuel leak, heck check all the injectors for fuel leaks. Not a good sign if you smell fuel.

Also check for fuel leak at the fuel pressure regulator.

The gas smell I would think is just unburnt fuel in the exhaust, if it is throwing a code and running like crud then the first place I would start looking is into your ignition.

matt More than likely so. Who did the tune-up? What did they replace? Could be coil pack and/or wires. Did they use dielectric grease on the boots? Did one of the wires come off the plug? Have you taken it back to the people that did the tune-up? Did they use genuine Motorcraft plugs if not which ones?

What code is it showing? Just a misfire?
If you could check to make sure your connections are good and that the wires aren't damaged... other than that if you have a coil pack, that could be the culprit. I just had that happen to me... Good luck.
