Well, I took a break from Gibbons to try below the Dam at Somerville. I was promised an abundance of 20-30 pound carp by fishermen who will remain unnamed. Needless to say, I did not catch any carp, but I did manage 4 buffs and 7 channel cats. I might try again on the lake proper next week. I will say the buffalo at Somerville are MUCH more aggressive biting than at Gibbons. I had screaming runs that had me throwing my breakfast and coffee every which way in a mad dash to the rods. FUN stuff smile

BTW, I have a huge carp drought going and could use some advice on how to end it. Apparently, spillways are just not the place for them right now.

nice fish! What kind of rig were you using when you caught those buffs?

I had a massive drought going until this past weekend. I prebaited a spot twice during the week and I think that was the ticket to have the fish there and ready...

I was fishing with method feeders. I only use two rods for this because its too overwhelming to keep 3 method feeders baited up. For bait, i use K1 strawberry ice cream boilies on a hair rig. I also shoot out method balls with a slingshot. That's mostly to keep busy, but i think it helps to keep the swim "fresh."

Nice catches.
I've been meaning to try out Somerville proper for some time now, but am waiting for cool weather!
An overnight trip might be nice...

Just a thought on catching a carp, I have never fished where you are at, but I have been catching more carp on maize than boilies recently.

PM me if you do. I did a little scouting and want to fish a session on the lake.

Brian this might be something a lot of us in houston would be interested in. Maybe we could do a fish in? Also if we can get spot that allows camping and fish at night instead of day that make me a happy carper clap

There are plenty of campgrounds around the lake.

I can honestly say that you will be wasting your time if you are looking for large carp in that lake or below it. I wasted an entire weekend there and if you use the search option and pull up Sommerville you will find a couple of reports that I already put up on that water. Far more better waters to try in the area. If you want to camp and catch a ton of fish go to the lake but they will be all very very small carp. Just thought I would give you a heads up.
