I saw this article today

61st Street pier to reopen soon
By Joe Kent
Correspondent
Published July 28, 2010

There is good news for anglers waiting for the opening of the 61st Street Fishing Pier. The facility is close to opening its doors.

Tuesday, I visited with John Menna, the owner, who said he anticipates opening within a couple of weeks. Most of the work has been completed, and the holdup is in waiting for certain inspections to take place. Menna was hoping to be back in business by Sunday; however, it looks like it might be a week or so after that before all of the approvals are granted.

The new fishing pier is going to be quite an upgrade from the earlier version that was destroyed by Hurricane Ike. There still remain several issues that have not been decided upon. The admission fee is one of them. One decision that has been made is senior citizens will fish at quite a discount during the week.

More details about the new pier, including the fees and rules, will be forthcoming in subsequent Reel Reports.

Recently, a reader reported seeing Jimmy McClure, owner of the badly damaged Galveston Fishing Pier, walking around the area with what appeared to be a contractor. I sent McClure a note asking for an update, and as soon as he responds, I will pass on what I learn.

this is really good news. as much as i love going ot bob hall it will be nice agian to go to galveston as it is an hours dr instead of 4 to corpus. i wish the 91st pier would come back soon. i hope that the 61st pier will not be so crowded but that will be like asking the sun to not rise.

Inbetween SB pier,Sea Wolf, and now the 61st all reopening its a really good thing. Up till now Sea wolf was crammed nightly. Maybe now some it will spread out and leave more room for all fishermen? My question is I heard the 61st was going to be lighted. I don't see any lights?

thanks for posting that picture up for us Capt Rob!! I'm glad to see that it's coming along quite nicely! I can't wait to go back and fish that pier.

I went to Seawolf Thursday 7/29/10 and it was packed. Usually Thursday night had a lot of room, but not last night. The mosquitoes were horrible, and the pier lights did not come on at the right time, they came on past dark, and people were leaving because of no lights. Until lately it was either Seawolf or 18th Street, now we have Sylvan Beach, then 61st in Galveston, for more options, and more elbow room to ENJOY fishing, without crossing lines. I'm just afraid that 61st will also become elbow to elbow fishing on the weekends.

You can count on 61st pier to be elbow to elbow for the first few months Jim. Well, I guess it depends on how much they charge. It won't be cheap, I'm sure of it. Probably somewhere between the $10-$15 range per person and then $1 extra per extra rod.

I'de be happy with it being in that range. Besides its a three minute drive from my Apartment on Sea Wall to the Pier. Save a 20 minute drive to Sea Wolf. I'm hoping 61st offers a Yearly pass or somthing. That would be cool.

I read Shannon Tompkins Outdoor report in todays (8/1/10) Sunday edition of the Houston Chronicle and 61st was mentioned (I would link and copy it, but it isn't on the chron.com website yet).

One thing that really bothered me is that you can take your equipment cart on the pier, but you have to take it back to your car/truck. The article basically states there isn't enough room for fishing carts to stay on the pier. ugh..................

"Because of some the changes in pier design, anglers can expect some changes in pier rules. Anglers still will be able to use hand-pulled wagons to haul their gear down the pier to fishing locations but won't be allowed to leave the wagons on the pier while they fish, Menna said.

"There's just not enough room to have those wagons out there," Menna said. "We have a lot of fishermen who use the pier, but we're a tourist pier, too. It can get real crowded, so we need all the room we can get."

WHERE ARE THE LIGHTS?

I drove by there today and was shocked to see there weren't any lights mounted. Are there going to be lights when the pier is opened, or will the lights come later?
