Anybody here do any frog gigging?
Just found a spot close to home full of bull frogs. Gonna have to walk the bank one night this weekend and try to get some.

use a very long cane pole with a small fish hook and a piece or red material. They will suck it up everytime!
I feel more like I do now than I did when I first got here!

The last time I went was back when I lived in Orange, TX - had access to 8 Commercial Crawfish Farms and they let me gig all the frogs I wanted as long as I trapped the coons, mink, nutria and otters off their farms. Oh, I forgot to tell you I used to be a professional fur trapper back then! Win-Win situation!! Dang, I ate a lot of frog legs...saw way too many snakes to, but they never bothered me, just the frogs.

watch for the snakes, I had the record in the Guiness Book of records for longest snake throw until my cousin beat me two nights later. I also threw the light and it looked like Haley's Comet going through the air. Only bad thing was the light landed in the water and it was the only one we had. It was a long dark walk back!

Had me some frog legs yesterday at lunch with my wife here in town. Mmmmmmm... She didn't like them very much or at least that is what her face was sayin'. Last time I was giggin' we stuck 3 or 4 good size rattlers all coiled up by the water.

KBW, gigging is okay, but Mark offers what I enjoy the most....If you can see those bullfrogs during the day, I used to use a fly rod and a small popping bug and could clean up....But, a spinning rod with a small topwater works well also. Just cast it out near them....Let it sit still for a moment or two, then just kind of twitch it a little....Man, they can't resist, and they put up a pretty good fight on light tackle. Just make sure you carry a pair of scissor with you to clip the end of their tongue which will be impailed on a hook. We used to carry a five gallon bucket with a piece of old truck tube stretch across it real tight with a slit cut in it for our holding bucket. Just grab that old frog clip his tounge and stuff him through the slit and keep catching. Just be prepared when you get to the dressing stage. Don't accidently let them all out at the same time.

Funny MikeC. I did that several years ago on 26 landing at Lake O the Pines. Frogs where hopping down the ramp and we were chasing them. Now I kill then and cut the legs off as I go. I have seen some biguns in the day time. They were sitting in grass about 30 ft off the bank. I may try a red TX rig worm and drag it by them next time.

I have the frog gig my dad used back in the late 50's early 60's. I do need to get a new cane pole for it though. It still works like new.
He quit gigging for frogs after two things happened. One morning after he had cleaned them, my grandmother took the trash out and one of the frogs croaked when she lifted the lid. I still remember her scream that morning. My dad used to hit them on the head with a hammer to kill them when he cleaned them. The last time I remember him cleaning frogs legs there was one that kept putting his front feet over his head when dad raised the hammer to hit him. I think that frog making defensive moves made him lose his taste for gigging frogs and cleaning them.

TX rigged with just enough weight to cast, pretty much anything they can fit in their mouth (7" trick worms work great). Just throw it out and drag it about 6" in front of 'em...they'll grab it. If ya miss one, try again. If ya LOSE one, watch for him to pop back up nearby, then try a different color and he'll grab again.
No fish is too good for the grease.

I gigged 25 last Sunday night at my quail lease. They made a fine 4th of July meal.
