According to FEMA in this article here seconds between a lightning flash and the thunder crash divided by 5 is the lightning distance in miles.

I never knew to divide by 5. Holy hair follicles! I was closer to being struck than I thought.

i have seen it twice up close and personal, never struck but within 10yds and 20yds, the one that struck within 20yds of my dad/brother/and I we were on a fence line taking cover after quail hunting a field and three of us hit the ground when it struck, the diameter of it looked was huge, scared the chit out of me, the other time I was at a trafic signal when lighting struck the pole next to me.

The bolt itself is only about the diameter of a pencil. What makes it look large is the white hot air around it and defraction of the light by water in the air. I have seen many strikes up close. Even been knocked unconcious by one and shocked by two others. Ya...Me and lightning go way back....

CrappieKyle I know a woman you need to meet. She has been struck 3 times. Once while she was filling her car up with gas. I always rub her head for luck.

My dad was a bomber pilot and has been struck by lightning in his plane several times. Apparently this is common...

On Lake Somerville we were fishing, sky was dark with lots of thunder. Hair was standing up on my arms, and if my hair would not have been braided with my cap on guess it would have been standing up too, felt really strange. I was getting shocked when I touched the rod I was fishing with. We decided to get off the water, took shelter on an island until the storm passed over.

I try not to tempt lightening! scared

RedTopLady I had a simular thing happen to me in college a few years back.

Me and 2 of my buddys were fishing Proctor and a Cold front started to push in so we decided to leave. It started to lightening and wind blowing. As were were walking back to my buddies Bronco we heard some snapping and my one buddy(Lee) said Gosh darn it(in other words).. we ignored him and he said it again. We stoped and asked him what was wrong he said that the rods kept shocking him and his hair was standing up all over, even on his head! Just then we heard the pop again ... this time it was loud! My other buddy (Fro) knocked the rods out of Lee's hands shoved him down and took off running. bolt Me of course, just out of instinct, took off running too! This guy (Fro) was 6'4" and 320#'s and out ran me at 6' and 220#'s. We got about 50 yard from Lee who is just now sitting up from his hard shove to the ground stunned! He said Gosh Darn Fro... what the Hell! Fro then starts screaming at him "GET IN THE BRONCO .. GET IN THE BRONCO... YOUR FIXING TO GET HIT BY LIGHTENING!" So finally Lee gets up and climbs into the Bronco scrapped up and bleeding. We then walk over and pick up the rods and throw them in the Bronco. Just as we get into the Bronco and look forward to where we walked from the tree next to where Lee was standing when Fro knocked him to the ground, gets hit with 3 Lightening bolts! The 40' Oak tree blew up and split in half. We knew Fro had just saved Lee's life not to mention mine!!
