I had some issues with my 35 hp motor igniting and running so I took it in to Rockwall Marine just two weeks ago and they said that it just needed a new water pump and something else and said it was now running just fine.

Well I finally had a chance to take it out and it took close to 20 tries to get it started the 1st time. After that the motor starts and runs fine as long as I keep the throttle down to where I am going 20 mph. When I lay the hammer down to push it anymore than that it runs for a bit then stalls and dies.

What do you guys recommend I do or think the problem is?

Try choking it. If the RPMs pick up..you have a fuel problem. Dirty carb or water in the tank.

Now, Donald...please pick John Bolton for your running mate.

Did they have the same fuel tank you are using to test with? Just Curious, Tommy and them usually do a great job. I'm sure if you took it back they would help you with it.

Yes, everything is the same on the boat. I don't know what it is. I heard they did great work there so that's why I took it to them. It's about 45 minutes from my house but figured it would be worth it to take it to some people that do good work. I'm just trying to talk myself into going out there again.

I may just try it again on the lake to see if it needed to be ran some and who knows. It may be better now. If it's not working still this weekend, I guess I'll go out that way. rolleyes

My 1977 model 35 Johnson hasn't missed a beat in 18 years and
last year it did the same thing. It's been sitting since.
I'm ready to start tinkering with it.
Thanks for the info gentlemen.

Cleaned out fuel pump, new fuel line, new fuel tank, cleaned out filters, and new quick connects. Dang motor still dies when running full throttle. Dies within 5 minutes of running wide open. Outside cleaning the carbs which is next on my list, anyone else have any suggestions?

I know it has to be something with the fuel intake since when it starts to die, I can push the choke in and give it a little more life.

I know this is very basic! But did you vent the tank?

I know they do good work. They fixed my dad's boat with no issues and were great service too. I already had it there two times already for the same issue and it wasn't resolved. I also asked them to do certain things on my boat the first time I had it in there and I don't believe those items were done so I just can't bring myself to go back a third time. I was also trying to keep things pretty cheap too since I've about had it with this engine dying on me.

I am going to order a carb kit here soon and will be hoping my buddy would help be clean the carbs out and maybe that will fix the issues.

I do know on the new fuel line that when I pump the ball it just loses the fuel and the ball flattens out instead of getting harder like it did on my old boat. When I run flat out it seems the ball compresses and stays compressed during that time too. I don't know what causes this but it's a brand new fuel line and bulb I have on it.

If you are pumping the bulb and it collapses then it would appear to me the tank is not venting properly or the engine is pulling fuel in too fast for it to vent. When the engine dies, does the bulb expand or does it stay collapsed?

Also, I know it is probably not the case, but make sure you have the bulb going the right way. that is something I would likely put on backwords.
