Guys, I am starting to do some research on a place at a lake for me and the family in the next few years. My question is what lakes should I be considering. Danny I'm originally from Odessa too and can understand why it is great to "Get Away". Why not have a place for you and your family on ALL the lakes? .... http://www.gorving.com/explore-rvs/type-c-motorhome-gallery.aspx

Buchannan is a fair piece from Austin. I would not go anywhere near the closer in lakes. My brother recently sold a place on the Llano river arm of LBJ. Price - $350k and the house was about 1100 sf. There was not much to it but his neighbor wanted the lot. The house has probably been bulldozed by now.

I've been giving this some thought because my wife and I look up in the Buchanan area ourselves from time to time, and we decided that to simultaneously own two homes 75 miles apart would be too much of a travel/time/maintenance burden for us with our jobs and lifestyle.
My in-laws live in Columbia MO and had a lake house at Lake of the Ozarks, about 90 miles away. They were always having to go down there to fix something, do maintenance, etc. So they had about a 90 minute drive to the lakehouse (which was lovely, btw. Hated it when they sold it.)
So I'd suggest to you that you look for a lake that wouldn't be a huge travel burden to get to in an emergency, or to visit regularly, and had close-by neighbors that were permanent residents and could contact you if necessary. Houses don't like being left locked and empty for a long time.
I've never killed anyone, but I've read several obituaries with great enjoyment.

Before you buy check out the water on Lakes. The Golden Algae has killed millions of fish from the Pussom Kingdom lake down through Waco. I had a place at Lake Whitney and sold out a few years ago as the quality of fishing went down. One at the end of the 400 mile limit is Richland Chambers Lake. It is a large lake of 45,000 acres and you can find some great buys there. Pelican Isle has some RV lots within 100 yds to the ramp for sale. Great fishing and no problem with the golden algae.
You can buy a good used diesel motorhome for about $40,000 and go to any place to fish or travel to Ruidoso Downs for the summer as we enjoy the cold 55 degree nights up here. I have owned lake property and find that it takes lots of time to keep grass cut and keep a homeowners assoc. happy. Not worth the trouble!!!!

Danny Growing up in Odessa/Midland, my parents hauled me and a bass boat with a Class C RV all over Texas especially the lakes from Lake Colorado City/Champion Creek to Lake Proctor and down alsong the the Hill Country Lake chain. Just can't buy a lake property in that half of the state and expect to have enough water to fish in during the reoccurring drought years. And with the way the economy is, used RV's prices are falling fast while Barack O. and Rick P. are going to property tax your non-homesteaded lakeproperty to the max.

I have a fishing buddy that bought a camper that is in a waterfront camper park on Lake Fork. He spends a couple of months at a time in it. Then he locks it up and comes home for several months with no worry about security or maintenance. He can fish from a pier near his front yard. He has lots of ground space and it's all maintained by the park owner. He has neighbors, a few that live there most or all the time, but most come on weekends and vacations. He rents a boat slip and leaves his there when he comes home. The space in a camper is pretty cramped, but not bad for a lake place. It is a good arrangement. I've had friends with lake homes and they spend more time on maintenance and yard work than fishing. Fork sounds good from what you read, but I've spent time there with my buddy when we blanked. It is over-run with fishermen from all over the country. It is so full of stumps just under the water that it is a lower-unit cemetery. It has good fish in it, but like other lakes they are hard to catch at times. By all means, get a place as close as possible to where you live that has good fishing. After a year or so, the drive will feel longer and longer and your enthusiasm will drop, such that you will stop using it as often because of the long drive. That's just my two cents.

I have a trailer on Fork. The nice part is the 1 hour drive. Close is better but nothing is close to Midland. Fork can get crowded especially in the spring. Since I am only an hour away I can pick and choice when to fish it. As far as the stumps go you just have to be careful and take it easy. I have fished Fork, Ray Roberts, and Lavon for 30 years and have never tore up a lower.

Don't leave Oak Creek out, not the biggest lake out there, but it's pretty nice. It's only 40 miles south of sweetwater, so not too far away from Midland.
