Lookin at used trucks and I found a 03 Chevy 1500 HD with the 6.0 in it. Whats the deal with these things? They LOOK like a 2500, But are still 1/2 tons. Anybody know the differences other than the 8 lugs and the motor? Thanks guys.

My dad has an 03 1500hd, its been a good truck, it has exra leaf springs not sure how much more, so better towing and payload, also it has the eaton g80 locking differential because it is an HD truck. Plus they are pretty quick trucks.

I think it is just a different body on a 2500 chasis. Not 100% sure though.

I think the only difference between the 1500HD and 2500 is the load rating of the leaf springs. The 1500HD is a few hundred pounds less, i think. They are basically a 3/4 ton.
I have an 05 2wd that I've had since 07. I just recently had to put a carrier bearing on it, other than that I have not had any problems with it. It doesn't have any trouble pulling my 19ft CC, but it will drink the gas doing it. My non-pulling mpg average is about 13. Pulling it is less than 10. Other than that no complaints.

Why don't they make the 1500HD anymore?

The 1500HD was a short term answer to Ford's popular Supercrew back in 2001-2002. GM thought they could just badge a light duty (8,600 lb) 2500 as a 1500HD and people would fall for it.
Now that GM has the 1500 CC short short bed, they feel they don't need the 1500HD. Cuz most of them either buy the 2500HD CC or the 1500 CC.
Now, it would be nice if GM offered a 1500 CC with a standard bed like Ford does.

I've got an 07 1500HD. Lots of power and doesn't even know my boat is behind it. Mine had a 5th wheel hitch on it at one point and some day I may put another one on it if I get a camper.
That 6.0 does drink the gas though. 13-15 on the highway, makes you cry in the city.

It's just funny how GM thought they could badge it as a "1500" HD to make the "non-truck" guys think it was a half ton. The same guys who didn't notice it has 8 lug wheels.
