 GIANT CARP FISHING FOR SCHOOLING BASS

caught this guy fishing with a 1/4 oz jigging spoon and 8lb line on bastrop. i think this is a grass carp can any body verify? the first pic is my wifes foot next to it, the fish was 29 inches long and fat!!! on a side note lake bastrop doesnt have a lake record for grass carp does this mean i could of had the record. fish was released to fight another day.

that looks to be a small mouth buffalo. nice catch!

not a carp or grass carp. Its a completely native smallmouth buffalo.

HOW BIG DO SMALLMOUTH BUFFALO GET? BASTROP HAS NO RECORD FOR THIS FISH. AND DOES ANYONE HAVE A GUESS AS TO THE WEIGHT, I CAN GUESS A BASS BUT THIS IS NOT MY FORTE.

Smallmouth buffalo state rod and reel record is 82.22 pounds. There have been bigger taken by other means. Yours could easily be 30 pounds or better. Hard to tell. Great fun on 8 pound line no doubt.

Yeah that looks mid to high 20's. A great fish. this is how many carp/buffalo anglers get "caught" themselves lol.

Very good buffalo! My guess is around 30, it's hard to say for sure without something more to compare it to in the pics. It's a really thick one, that's for sure. We seem to see a lot of buffalo caught on accident my bass/crappie/etc. fishermen on lures. I think they are more apt to "chase" something down than carp. Congrats on the catch.

thanks for the weight estimates! if lake bastrop has no record than i could have submitted this fish when i caught it right? the only reason i ask is this is my first fish that could have been in the record books mabye.

if it had no record for buffalo or carp on rod and reel then yes you could have gotton it sumitted.

I feel a bass angler turning to the dark side. Now I guess you have to go catch a buffalo and get a record. Not so long before you get hooked lol.
Catch and Release fishing is a lot like golf. You don't have to eat the ball to have a good time.

yeah lots of lakes have no record, donny and I broke the record at buchanan something like 6 times in one weekend. both Carp and Buffalo. Fun but I never care enough to certify it. I do wish I had certified my son's state record though.
