I don't do any jug or trotlining for catfish. What is a good weight to use? Can you buy weights designed for either type of fishing?

No such thing, other guys on here will chime in that make their own or use old window weights, stuff like that. I just think a brick gets the job done no problemo.

And I apologize if my first comment came off as if I was being a azz (was not my intention), just giving you and idea on something that in most cases could be free. I know at one time I had some extras that came with my house when I bought it.

No problem..Just thought a brick might not be heavy enough and have sharp edges which might cut the line. Just looking for alternatives from the pro's.

I use 2oz bank sinkers when sitting jugs in a creek or other confined area...
In a lake I use home made concrete anchors (quikcrete in 20oz styrofoam cup = about 2#). I figure they cost less than 25cents each.

I do what fishfree suggested, pour concrete into those lil red party cups, I twist a coat hanger part and set in down in their and let it dry, or I have made some by getting lead and melting it in a skillet then pouring it in a lil dog food can or like vienna? sausage cans and also letting the metal coat hanger sit in them

I fill 16oz water bottles with concrete, they end up at about 2 lbs.

I ran outta bricks with holes, but to keep them from cutting the line, use 1/4" nylon braid rope for making a loose loop. Then tie trotline cord to that.
I make up mine. Used to melt a lead alloy back in late 1970s to 1981.
Now I use concrete mix. My standard weight is the plastic quart (paint measure) container you buy at Wal-Mart or Lowees for about 70 cents each. Weight is about 3# each. I also use the plastic pint BlueBell ones for about half that weight. I make an elongated "U" with a curve on the ends that go into the concrete from the thick galvanized wire for chain link fences. Also use the thick galvanized wire handle from old rotting plastic buckets. Also, I slit a little hole near the top of the plastic container and run a piece of trotline cord thru it & attach to the galvanized wire loop. This ensures the concrete to stay in the plastic container to protect your boat as concrete is abrasive & keeps it from getting chipped or broken.
You can also use Cool Whip & butter plastic containers, as they are thicker than really thin plastics. And we have too many plastic scraps in our lakes & rivers & oceans already.
The thick galvanized wire from chain link fences works great also on my 3.5 gallon concrete trotline anchors weighing 63 to 72# each as well.

Jug line weights and trot line weights are two different animals. For a trot line I used to fill a milk jug with cement and then drive long nails into the sides to make it look like an old mine so it would dig into the bottom instead of dragging. every 10 feet or so along the line I would have a brick countered by a float to keep the main line off the bottom.
For jugs, if I anchor them I use the dixie cup with concrete.
