anyone have one? anyone like or dislike this reel. i use the calcuttta, and i was thinking of buying my nephew the cardiff. he wants to learn how to use the baitcast. would you guys recomend this reel?

Isn't it basically a Calcutta minus 1 bearing? If so, probly won't notice much of a difference.

no the cardiff is not as refined as the calcutta. It's a great starter reel that like any other shimano reel is newbie proof which means starters can get used to their reels fairly quickly. I have a few cardiffs and calcuttas and the calcuttas are smoother than my cardiffs.

True, they are not as smooth as a Calcutta, nor are they as bullet proof. The main reason for this is the Calcutta has a one piece machined aluminum frame, and the Cardiff has a multi piece cast frame. Bearing count has little to do with smoothness. Smoothness in most cases is a result of precision tolerances.

Cardiff is a great starter reel, and will handle regular apps just fine for years. Longevity will become an issue though if used for heavier apps.
