Get yourself a castnet and catch shad. No one sells it fresh becuase it's to hard to keep alive. Frozen may work, but not as well as fresh.

Thirty years or so ago there was a fish market on one of the local piers at Corpus. I used to buy whole fresh shrimp for bait. The old boy who ran it charged $.35 a pound for bait shrimp and $.75 a pound for eating shrimp. Regardless of which you asked for he dipped them out of the same barrel.
Shrimp make great freshwater catfish bait.

The dam is off the road going to Sandia and Orange Grove . It's Hwy 359. Coming from Corpus headed North on I 37 it's one of the first (if not THE first) Mathis exits. Go West through town and you will see a right turn marked Lake CC State Park. There is also a bait and tackle shop on that corner. Go down about 1/2 mile or so and parking for the dam is on the left. It's a wildlife preserve but they still let you go down to the dam. Good luck.
