I am not much of a catfisherman but go out maybe 2 or 3 times a year. I fish for eating size fish with primarily treble hooks on a Carolina rig and a slip bobber.

I keep missing the hook set. Can anyone provide some advice. Bobber goes under or is pulled away several inches...what do I do to hook the fish.

grab your pole take up the slack, when the fish jerks at you jerk back. might try taking that bobber off and just tightlining

use a #6 treble, it'll catch big-uns and small ones

It depends on a lot of factors. What hook are you using with what bait? How heavy is your sinker? What type and size float? How deep are you fishing?

If you are fishing shad or cut bait, use circle hooks and dump the float. If you are fishing prepared baits, you can probably still dump the float, but I have found instances where fish won't bite the bottomed baits. In those cases, use a Santee-Cooper rig that keeps your bait off the bottom but keeps a tightline. Fish will hang themselves. The float gives them too much room unless you are fishing a light setup with a slip cork, small trebles and punchbait.

One important thing nobody has asked: what kind of line are you using?

Monofilament line will sink below the surface, often times resulting in ALOT of slack to take up on a hookset. Can't take it up without moving the cork alot due to the drag of the water, but can't set the hook firmly either. Only way around THAT is to CONSTANTLY keep the slack taken up and try to keep it on the surface, or else wait until the fish takes out all the slack. Braided line doesn't do that (or at least Power Pro doesn't). It will stay on top where it's much easier to control and/or take up on the hookset.

No fish is too good for the grease.

Fishing with mono on a carolina rig with 1/8oz wieght. I am fishing with smaller size trebles from Team Catfish (dead red and fury thing) using stinkbait. I have been fishing from the bank and using a float about 3-4 ft above the hook to keep from getting snagged on rocks and sticks.

Turtles...i doubt it cuz we have been catching some just missing more than we catch.

i missed a lot of fish with the Fury thing, and the full length dead red tubes.

I use a # 6 treble hook and I cut the tube in half. Use a slip bobber or a slender or stick bobber and a small split shot. hook ups will go way up!

I'm thankful for all the things i have, and all the things i don't. I have dreams that will come true and i have some that won't.

When the bite is real light use a #6 treble with big marvs or secret 7 and one of those 1 1/2" to 2" skinny corks and a clamp on lead weight 3 or 4 inchs above the hook and heavy enough to make the cork stand up. Do not pull the tip up, when the cork goes under set the hook to the side and down as though you were trying to bury the cork underwater. You will hook more and lose less. All 19 of the catfish that I caught on my trip to Braunig was in this manner. Try it, you will like it.
