We have a Maytag Wide-By-Side fridge that we bought 8 years ago and the compressor is fried. Is it worth repairing?

If the compressor is bad it will cost to much to fix. It might be the relay on the compressor? How do you know the compressor is bad?

Probably not. If it is one of those $1,200 fancy-shmancy jobs, maybe, but probably not. I work on the big commercial equipment for a living, so I could repair my own, and last time mine acted up I bought a new one. Minor parts are not hard to replace, but compressors cost way too much.

What part of "uphold the constitution" don't they understand?

Fishing Ape is right, might not be the compressor. Sometimes the overload on the side of the compressor goes bad. Mine did, cost 20.00 to replace it. Check out the overload and clean the coils good.

Put the plug in.

I had a technician change out the relay and it didn't help unfortunately. He said the compressor was fried frown .

Kind of what I was thinking. It is a top of the line stainless model but I don't think it's worth fixing. I've already let my youngest brother come out to the house and rob the ice maker out of it so he could replace the one in his wide-by-side. No more Maytags for this guy. I'm thinking about a Kenmore or a GE Profile for the next go-round.

Have you cleaned the coils (back and bottom) and checked to make sure the drain isn't clogged with frozen water? It's more common than anything else. Hard to imagine the compressor going out on an 8 yr old unit. There are refrigerators 40+ yrs old everywhere....

Using a dust vac or shop vac on those coils will sure make them last.

One more thing you might check is the magnetic seals around the doors. It's less common, but it happens.

Maytag went to [censored] around 5 years ago. They build fridges to last between 5 and 7 years nowdays, so dont pay alot for one, those fridges that lasted 20 30, and even 40, years are gone forever.

COMING SOON! .. THE STICKLE HOOK " the stay level sickle hook". sits level in the water with all knots.! Provides better hook sets and more natural jigging motion. No more adjusting the knot, gluing , or tying loop knots that cause the hook point to tangle in the loop, or worse knick the line.. The jighook that will make all others obsolete !

I'm letting one of my brothers rob parts off of it for his pos Maytag.

Yep, planned obsolescence.

I had a Maytag and bought a 5 yr extended warranty. Thank Goodness!! After the 5th or 6th repair, Best Buy took it back and we got a Whirlpool. Maytags are junk. Ask around. Google it.

Biden famously said in the New York Observer, โ€œI mean, you got the first mainstream African-American who is articulate and bright and clean and a nice-looking guy. I mean, thatโ€™s a storybook, man.โ€
