Hook them right up under thier jaw and then come up stright between thier eyes. Right between thier eyes is a hard shot there (just the same for shad). In the lips - they pull off way, Way, WAY to easy.
But right between thier eyes - it's a hard spot there - and hard to pull off.
Fish them just like you would a jig (and as to keeping them alive - forget about that - more Crappie have been caught on a dead minnow than alive) - it looks better and is better than a jig - dead or alive - just make sure it's fresh dead - they love it,
PS: Forget about a minnow on the back of a jig body, You will do better without the jig body - just minnow/shad hooked like we are talking about, +1

+1 but caught a lot of fish on dead ones and beauty is measured by each differently.. Dead is dead but not always bad....stick to jigs..no heartbeat needed!!!!!!!
A good day fishing is not losing a jig, a bad day fishing is not losing a minnow!

1 - Trolling-Head Hook 2 - Straight Line-Back Dosal Hook 3 - Headless or Stepped on-Weedless style when the bite is slow Except for #3 method, if it don't wiggle when you pull it up put on a fresh one.

Im a lip man myself. Keeps the minnow in a natural look going through the water. Works great.

Nobody mentioned through the eyeballs. In one eye and out the other. Stays on better than through the lips if you do a false hook set. Meaning, if you jerk to set the hook but miss the crappie then your minnow will still be there.

Game fish will attack a minnow from the front to avoid getting fins in the roof of their mouths(That statment will open can of worms)

Jeff, I do the eye thing too, but thought it might be a little graphic for some. BobGlen, even from the front, it don't work out sometimes for them. Everybody likes to eat crappie.

You dont hook them. You buy a bigger hook and ask them to sit on it nicely
